2000 SS how to replace rear wheel hub?
#5
Rohan,
I feel your pain. I replaced the rear hubs a couple of weeks ago. A wheel hub puller will not work since there is nothing in front to push against.
For the first hub I ended up taking off the strut from the knuckle and also removed one of the other bolts that is holding the knuckle in place. I could then rotate the knuckle and was able to use a hammer to hit the hub from behind and knock it out.
After thinking about an easier way to get the second rear hub off, I came up with using a steering wheel puller.
From behind the hub (where you plug into the sensor), put the steering wheel puller in between the back of the hub and the bolt that is holding the strut on and then use one of the bolts that held the hub on and screw it into one of the bolt holes (in the opposite direction from which you removed the bolt). Make sure the center bolt on the puller is on the back of the hub and begin turning the center bolt on the puller until the hub comes out. This was much easier than using a hammer to get it out.
The emergency brake cable will still be attached to the hub. There are two screws to take off .
I hope this helps.
