Drag racing rule of thumb. Take whatever budget and time factor you have and multiply by 3....lol.

Grayghost: I think that if someone is of a sound financial footing (a good money manager) - budgeting can be managed. Know what you want to do - put together a detailed plan or layout of expenses and it can be done with little deviation from a planned/forecasted budget.
Know what you need to procure - know your hours/labor costs - It's a project - it can be done. My first build SSV was below the expected build amount. - knowing that and having the experience of one build - cost projections for SSV2 was easy to figure out. Right now I am on target for parts and labor costs -
However - the time factor is another story - seeing you don't pay for time not working on the project - you don't have any way to control the lay-time, time not spent on working on the car. There's where your 3 TIMES factor may be right on or even on the the light side.

. If you asked a chassis builder to knock out a Pro Stock car or engine builder for a motor they pretty much have a number for you because they crank these items out on a regular basis. When you build a one of a kind car, you can end up with a great deal of trial and error, and having to redo things. But since you have done one already, you have some idea about it. I was referring to starting a new project with a clean sheet of paper. Also depends on how much of the work you are doing, versus a fabricator, which in the long run is probably cost effective as he has done so many. And part of the money I was referring to is all the testing that has to be done to shake it down. You start with every dollar you spend when you head to the track and get home, add that up dozens of times and it's not cheap. Even more so if you have to rent the track. Then the wear and tear on stuff making test passes. It all adds up.

Grayghost: My thought is that we can both agree on is, no matter what this hobby/sport is, it is expensive no matter which way you look at it. In the Late '60's & Early '70's I raced a C/SM '69 Nova - and before that an altered (only because I had a big block chevy in an oldsmobile) 1966 442. And in those days I never had enough money - and I remember sleeping under my truck at Indy because I couldn't afford a hotel, or any other track in my tent because that is all I could afford - so yes, I know it takes a lot of money no matter how well you plan - there is never enough. I am fortunate enough now in my life - that with the experience I have with my first Monte build and all the others I have done - I can plan so as not to get caught short (hopefully). Thank you for your input - I really do appreciate it.

I wish you the best. I am living my life through you....lol. When we finally got a trailer with a lounge we just lived at the track. Had a camping shower bag we hung up to heat water, and pulled a tarp around the front of the trailer. Lived in PB and Jelly, Pimento Cheese sandwiches and Tom's Crackers. We both know the incredible amount of money and hours spent, but YOLO. As Dick Simon famously said, you can sleep when you are dead.
