Not all older Chevys with rally stripes had vinyl roofs. Vinyl roofs were common, but that is not why the rally stripes were not put on the roof. GM new that if they striped the roof, they would get laughed at by the other car makers...

That's just what I had heard and the '71 Camaro I drove in high school was striped with a vinyl roof. I wonder what the history behind the no roof stripes is. Anyone know who to ask at GM? I would totally send an email.

I'm pretty sure the No Stripes on the Roof was simply a design protocol from Chevy. The SS or RS packages on 60's and 70's Camaros, Chevelles, Novas, and Impalas usually included specific emblems and a set of Rally Stripes that were placed on the hood and trunk only. Camaro had the stripes extend on to the rear spoiler as well.

I think Pontiac was the only GM division that put stripes on the roof (Trans Am).

Opinions are like well...we all have them. I don't see any problem and dont recall any negative things being said. Guess I was lied to. And as far as them going all the way down on bumpers, thats just cool. maybe not for a Monte but I've never seen one done that way.
