Default Emblem Modding for fun

Beautiful day outside today. After washing the car I decided to finish a couple of emblem mods since the warm weather helps.

First is the gold bowtie (that has no place on a silver car..) removed from the trunk lid a few months ago (I was going to put it on a pushcart at work decided to just put a '3' on the cart to identify is as mine..), repainted and replaces the one on the grill.

Second was a completion of de-badging the trunk lid project, but I went slightly off course and decided to have a laugh for awhile..

Sure -

First off, temperature matters. Back in the summer I removed the gold bowtie from the trunk lid on a warm day with nothing but fishing line and then used Goof Off to remove traces of the double sided tape. Be sure and clean any traces of solvents from the trunk lid when done and re-wax the area.

I tried to detach the clear/gold portion from the chrome in order to paint it but couldn't so I surrendered to roughing it up with a scotchbrite pad and masking it off.

Paint is some leftover metallic charcoal. Might be Rustoleum. Since I never installed it on my pushcart it sat in my shed for a while.

Later in the fall I decided to remove the MONTE CARLO LT block letters on the trunk lid (kind of bland, same font as everything from Express delivery vans to Metro specks). I used my trusty $10 Harbor Freight heat gun to warm the lettering and twisted them off. More Goof Off solvent and polishing to clean up. On a whim I left the first O on the lid and put two Ls before and after.

Went to the shed to get the 3M 03609 emblem tape for the lettering and got the idea to replace the stock front bowtie with the painted one. Heat gun the emblem, this time I pried it off with a plastic putty knife. Heat a section, wiggle knife, repeat.

The front one has a stub that fits into a slot on the grille. When pry tool hits it start the same process from the other side.

When it was finally off I cleaned the old tape off with Goof Off, cleaned the Goof Off off with Goof Off Off (isopropyl alcohol) and attached the painted former trunk emblem to the grille with 3M 03609 tape.

TLDR: remove taped on bowtie, mask off chrome, paint, stick back on.
