Default Another Hit and Run :(

I also received a hit and run to the back of my car this weekend. Looks like someone backed into it while they were trying to park. The rear bumper is cracked (as shown) and I don't know what to do about it. I haven't filed a claim with police/insurance because it literally just got put on insurance not even a week ago and I thought a thousand dollar deductible would be an ok place to start...gonna lower that..

Anyways, here are the pics. The damage isn't huge, it's actually pretty minor...but quite annoying, being cracked. Is there any way to fix this other than a new bumper cover and paint?

You can V it out from the back side and try and glue it back together. A proper repair would involve Ving out the crack on both sides, roughing the surface up and then applying adhesion promoter followed by flexible plastic repair with a mesh reinforcement on the back side to keep the repair nice and strong. Unfortunately that will still involve bodywork and paint to the outside of the cover. Usually the kind of damage your cover took will end up costing more to repair and paint than it would be to get a new aftermarket cover and paint it. You can do a quick repair just from the backside to save money, but it will probably look terrible and crack back apart. Try and line the cracks back up and duct tape the front really well so they dont move while you repair the back. Rough the back up with an angle grinder or some 40 grit sandpaper by hand. Get some plastic adhesion promoter and apply it to the bare plastic where you roughed it up. Then apply plastic repair adhesive from behind and use a mesh reinforcement in it to give it strength. Let it dry then remove the duct tape from the front. You will still see the cracks but they may look a little neater and less noticeable. Honestly tho its probably not worth the effort to half-*** fix it. It wont really be worth having it professionally fixed either. Your best bet would be to find an aftermarket bumper cover or even a JY bumper cover and have it painted to match. It will still be much cheaper than a 1000 dollar deductible.

Thanks for your input. I didn't know if there was any way to support and bondo this kind of damage to look right...I found a couple of aftermarket bumper covers running from $100-250.

I will most likely wait maybe until summer and buy a new bumper cover, and have someone repair a very small rust spot beginning on the crease right above the left back wheel well....and then have them paint the fender and the bumper cover at the same time; hopefully it won't cost too much..

It's just really disappointing that people can do stuff like this.

Man first my car now yours. Our montys seem to attract other cars in parking lots like a magnet. What the hell is wrong with people. If your not sure how much space you have then just open the door and look. Still trying to get my problem figured out.

I know how you feel, it's horrible that people would damage your car, and just leave. It happened to me a few months ago. They left a nice dent on my right in front of my rear left wheel. I hate people.
