If you want to keep it black looking, you could also paint the mesh red, then seeing red through it won't look as bad.

But yes if you matte black behind it, you won't see much of the old grille

I've got the same car you do. I hope you put some new SS badges on the back of it soon, otherwise there's no telling whether your car is an LS or SS from the rear. I agree, the red "Monte Carlo" lettering on a red car looks kinda bad, once I can I'm going to paint my letters white, keep the SS letters the same. As for the badge on the front of the car that is the Monte Carlo badge! It's what dignifies it and sets it apart from other cars! Like the silver Mustang on the front of Mustangs, or the Red, White, and Blue striped flag on Camaros. Your choice if you want it off, but I kinda like it. I've never seen 7th generation SS badges on a 6th generation Monte before, I'd like to see how it turns out, but I think if you kept the "Monte Carlo" lettering on the back, it'd look better, just my opinion.

Yep take a look at the finished product above..I just remounted the bigger SS where the red bowtie was and nothing else..Its true what you say though..It is an SS Most people dont have an SS and fake it with SS medalians.
But ya know theres only a 20 hp difference and a few other goodies but Im glad i paid 7k for it 6 years and 87k ...not 27k or so new!! How much further can it depreciate as it is mint and will be still on my watch...

Might be 20HP, but it's a world of difference in torque between the two. And it can depreciate a lot, the Monte Carlo's have one of the poorest resale values, that's one reason why GM stopped making them. Hold onto it, keep it in good condition, make it rare, and it will eventually become a collector's item, that's the best we can hope for.

If you DO put on an SLP or T.S grille, get some flat black vinyl and lay it inside where the grille opening is, as the red ( or ANY) color shows thru the grille and looks bad, even on the black. I have a shine behind my grille from the center section. That's a good tip from another member of actually another forum, but I've seen her car, and it looks REALLY good! She painted the edge of her grille silver, also:
