Personally, if they were going to do a final halo model to mark the end of their combustion engine lines, I'd much rather see a do-over for the XLR.

Take the C8 (leave the Chevy engine alone this time) give it fresh bumpers and lights, and put a high end interior in it. Youd have a legitimate Audi R8 competitor. Could also use the eray as a basis for a XLR-V trim (to compete with the awd R8 Quattro).

R8 starts at like $150 and the C8 only $65. You could easily do $30k worth of luxury parts - mostly focused on the interior - and still come in under $100k and be a massive bargain over the R8.

I'm a big fan of the XLR too. Sleek and powerful car design on all fronts.

I've got a soft spot for that generation of Cadillac performance for some reason (cts/xlr/sts) - I really like the hard, stealth fighter like body lines - especially in the darker colors.

I just think they massively screwed up the xlr by forcing it the Northstar route. While the 04 model was 30 hp or so down from the base corvette of that year, the second model year in 05 was suddenly almost 70 hp down comparing base model to base model in the new c6 with the move to the ls2. By 08, its a full 100 hp down with the release of the LS3 in the c6 (putting even the XLR-V only ahead by 10hp or so, not even enough to negate the weight difference).

Its not even like they were trying to save the LS2 as a C6 exclusive as they put it in the TBSS, GTO, and even the CTSV. Plus, it obviously fits just fine as the xlr on the Y body platform of the corvette.

I do get that Cadillac is more luxury focused, but the person buying a 2 door sports car like that is going to be far more interested in performance than their average buyer and being down something like 70+ hp is really a big deal to someone like that. Especially when its practically free to do for Cadillac as all of the components are already available in the Chevy parts bin to literally drop it in. I know they'd get beat up by the magazines for continuing to bumper swap the same car across brands, but its a worthwhile tradeoff for a cheaper engine with 100 more hp. Plus the Northstar already had a pretty bad reputation for reliability issues by that point in its life cycle so I don't think even the Cadillac purists would've complained much.

I'd just love to see them redeem themselves on that badge giving it one more go with the c8. That would be absolutely legendary in Cadillacs lineup.
