<!--/photos-video-wrapper-->
<!-- /Main photo wrapper --><!-- test output end: --><!-- the article, at a glance, downloads, top competitors, from buying guide --><!-- left column -->The 2012 Detroit Auto Show saw the introduction of the 2013 Cadillac ATS sedan, the American luxury brand’s latest rival to popular German models like the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4. We’ve been down this road before, with previous compact Caddy sedans proving woefully uncompetitive (think Cimarron) or bland and forgettable (the Catera). Based on its handsome exterior and impressive spec sheet, the ATS appears to be a quantum leap forward from past efforts, as Cadillac finally takes a serious fight to the compact sedan competition.
To flesh out the ATS lineup, Cadillac will soon introduce a coupe model, with sales expected to begin sometime in early 2014. These artist illustrations provide a sneak peek at the upcoming ATS Coupe, which employs the same rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform as the sedan. From these images, the transformation from four to two doors has been done extremely well. The sweptback headlamps, prominent grille, and side character line – running along the sides and through the door handles – look especially handsome on the ATS Coupe.

2014 Cadillac ATS Coupe

The Same, But Different
Expect the same range of engines offered in the ATS sedan to migrate to the coupe. These include the 200-bhp base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a 270-bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, and 318-bhp direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6. While the V-6 is expected to be the performance model, Cadillac reps have hinted the turbo 4-cylinder could offer the ideal blend of power and handling balance, thanks to the engine’s lighter weight. Fuel economy should also be better – in the Buick Regal GS sedan, this same engine returns 20/32 mpg city/highway.
All-wheel drive will be optional with the turbo 4-cylinder or V-6; the base model is rear drive only. A choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission can be had with the top two versions as well, while the base ATS Coupe (like the sedan) comes only with an automatic. Adding all-wheel drive to the turbocharged engine also means having to opt for the auto gearbox. Confused yet?
According to our sources, Cadillac considered adding a station wagon and convertible to the ATS range. However, for the time being, those plans appear to have been put on ice. Luckily, the ATS Coupe is still on track, and we expect the production version to appear later this year at the L.A. Auto Show, or early next year in Detroit. An ATS-V Coupe powered by a turbocharged V-6, delivering somewhere in the region of 400 to 450 bhp, is also likely and could be revealed at the same time. WoW Let us pray I know I'm not in a position to purchase one, but I'm happy they are building them...Dreams are still `free for now...(Our Gov't is trying to find a way 2 tax our `Dreams) ~> LOL

LoL `Devin LoL,

We just have to many choices & not enough money $ 4-Sure...You don't want another Monte Carlo produced, because you want to have one of the last great Monte's

Good Morning Mod `Mike, I think it will be a good platform.
GM needs to lighten `up without the cost of safety, but for better MPG's & Performance...

The new Direct Injection Engines seems to get the performance + decent MPG's...Plus, I do hope they add the Turbo 2 the v-6's I look forward to seeing the new ATS coupes & read their Road Tests & Reviews...
I'm just happy that they are making a Coupe

I think GM should be careful not to put too many Cadillacs in their line-up. Improve upon the CTS-V and leave it at that.

I'm really hoping GM re-introduces a "luxury-sport" coupe to fill the void left behind when they dropped the Monte. Even if they don't call it the Monte. Like when they replaced the Grand Prix with the G8. The Camaro is considered a "sports/sporty" car. The Monte was "luxury sport". Two different categories.

Same here. I like it. Nice car. But will never afford it. Still think they should just stick with the CTS-V though.

Again the economy is down the tubes. And G.M. Brings out another high priced Cadillac. What are you thinkin ? No wonder a lot of the younger gen is buying off shore cars & trucks. *&^%$#

Mod `Mike, you are again up to date & in the know 4-Sure
At the preview, GM said the 2013 Cadillac ATS will offer "high-tech engines, rear-wheel drive, and optional all-wheel drive...to take on the best in the segment"--meaning the benchmark 3-Series. It also showed a concept coupe that's supposed to be very close to the finished article, and said an ATS sedan will be offered too. Recent talk has pointed to ATS convertible and wagon variants as well. However, the company has not yet confirmed the all the details.
Some recent reports claim the new Alpha platform will underpin a wide variety of upcoming General Motors products. Said to be very flexible in footprint, the buzz says this new package will replace the Sigma (Cadillac CTS, STS) and Zeta (Pontiac G8, Holden Commodore) platforms in GM's portfolio. If the speculation is true, the 2013 or 2014 Cadillac CTS, next-generation 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, a large Chinese-market Buick sedan, and the replacement for the Holden Commodore will all use this new platform. There may be rear-drive Buick and Chevrolet sedans for the U.S. as well. Check back for updates.

The key point is that the 2013 Cadillac ATS shapes up as a more-direct rival than CTS to the 3-Series, Audi A4, Infiniti G, Lexus IS, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The CTS is priced to compete with those cars but is dimensionally closer to the premium-midsize BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, Infiniti M, Lexus GS, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Thanks everyone for your post/votes & comments...
