Unhappy *Cadillac Coupe ATS version of new compact is on hold

Cadillac Ices Rest of ATS

Coupe version of new compact sedan is on hold I was hoping they would produce it....

From the April, 2012 issue of Motor Trend
By Mike Connor

To help revive its stock price, Cadillac has put the coupe version of the ATS sedan on hold. GM worries variable costs of building a coupe version of the ATS sedan won't pay off in added volume.

Most coupes are fashion statements, and don't sell well compared with their four-doorsedan counterparts. The ATS revealed at the Detroit auto show will compete with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, and Audi A4, each of which has a two-door, a convertible, and a wagon version.

GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson has said he wants Cadillac to regain its title as Standard of the World, and part of his strategy is to make the brand a viable competitor in Western Europe. Cadillac can't do that without a full range of ATS body styles. Of course, the brand needs a dealer network there first. It was widely reported last fall that Cadillac had iced the ATS convertible. This was a clear hint the coupe could be next. The ATS coupe was designed with a "formal" roofline rather than a fastback like the CTS coupe, to avoid yet a third rear quarter-panel stamping for the ragtop.

The ATS wagon, key to European sales, has been canceled altogether. Cadillac designers are still said to be working on a fastback coupe version of the next CTS sedan, which switches to the ATS' Alpha platform about the 2015 or '16 model year. That will leave us with two Caddy coupes before the end of the decade, including the ELR extended-range electric, based on the 2009 Converj concept.

GM's stock price has fallen more than 30 percent from its November 2010 initial public offering price. Cutting costs is the kind of short-term solution Wall Street craves. Building a luxury portfolio to better compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes would build a value in the company outside the comprehension of the myopic investment community.

The Same, But Different
Expect the same range of engines offered in the ATS sedan to migrate to the coupe. These include the 200-bhp base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a 270-bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, and 318-bhp direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6. While the V-6 is expected to be the performance model, Cadillac reps have hinted the turbo 4-cylinder could offer the ideal blend of power and handling balance, thanks to the engine’s lighter weight. Fuel economy should also be better – in the Buick Regal GS sedan, this same engine returns 20/32 mpg city/highway.
All-wheel drive will be optional with the turbo 4-cylinder or V-6; the base model is rear drive only. A choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission can be had with the top two versions as well, while the base ATS Coupe (like the sedan) comes only with an automatic. Adding all-wheel drive to the turbocharged engine also means having to opt for the auto gearbox. Confused yet?

That stinks.

We really liked that car. Jenna was possibly going to get one in a few years when we pay her Impala off

Hi Mod `Mike, I agree...., but it hasn't been cancelled yet ?
I was looking forward to it being produced 4-Sure...I've love to drive a turbo four with a six speed manual & AWD.

I sure like the coupe, more then the 4 door sedan...
I haven't given `up hope ~> yet ~>

When the Cadillac CTS dropped onto the market, it was available in a variety of versions, including a sedan, a coupe, and a station wagon. Now, the same recipe for success will be applied to the new ATS. Cadillac will first put out a sedan and a coupe version, but a station wagon version and a convertible are also said to be in the mix. Why? Well, Americans need cheaper alternatives to German coupes and Cadillac is ready to deliver just about anything we’re looking for in order to pick up sales. They have the platform to build on and will more than likely make sure they get their money’s worth on it.
The upcoming ATS Coupe will be revealed for the 2014 model year and will borrow just about everything from the sedan version, except for the sedan’s two rear doors. It will get the same active shutter grille, LED-infused headlights, chrome trim, vertical taillights, and integrated trunk spoiler. Other minor changes will make the Coupe a sportier rendition of the sedan.
The ATS Coupe will be built on the same rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform and will be offered with the same engine line-up as the sedan: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 200 HP, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 270 HP, and a 3.6-liter V6 with 318 HP. The engines will be combined with either a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. There will also be an option for an all-wheel-drive system.
BMW and Audi better start prepping themselves for some competition.
