Rag Top Monte Carlo

RE: Rag Top Monte Carlo
My research shows converting a car to a convertible is HIGHLY DANAGEROUS. WHY? Engineers stress that without the frame being re-enforced these vehicles are highly acceptable to torque twist, the next bigger fear is a front end collision, where the dash folds in onto the front passengers -- crushing or cutting off their legs.
Factory Convertibles are engineered for all the added stresses and fold points to ensure the passengers are kept safe as possible. While most of these conversion shops have excellent fabricators, they are not engineers and most do not take into account the soundness and safety of the vehicle, rather the beautification of the conversion.
I personally would not buy or even consider this without the factory being fully involved.

I remember reading that the Plymouth Road Runners with the 426 Hemi in 1968-1970 actually started out with a convertible body, then a roof was welded on to make a coupe. The standard hardtop uni-bodies couldn't handle the enormous torque of the Hemi, but the convertible body/frame could.
This kind of backs up what Black Attack is saying.
