New axle backs for the Mustang
Hey everyone so my axle backs just came in. I was contemplating on what to go with for the longest time. I couldn't decide between axle backs or cat backs and then I couldn't decide on the muffler itself. After doing a lot of research I found that the stock mustang exhaust flows pretty good and that you won't see really any gains with a cat back exhaust, about the only way you see pretty good gains is with long tube headers. I may go that route now, but as it is I decided I would stick with axle backs for now.
So being that I was just doing axle backs I tried to find an exhaust that would be loud and aggressive without being obnoxious. I had looked at Borla Stingers, Mac boom tubes, SLP muffler deletes, Flowmaster outlaws, Corsa Xtremes, you name it and I probably thought about it.
I recently found out that mufflers are actually looked at here so I couldn't go with boom tubes or SLP muffler delete since they are both muffler deletes and I didn't want to run into any issues with inspections. Next was Stingers and Corsa Xtremes. The stingers sound great but aren't loud enough unless you delete the cats, Corsa Xtremes are louder but don't have that old school deep muscle car sound that I like. So my choice ended up being Flowmaster outlaws. These are a "race" series muffler which you will see in the pics that it hardly resembles a muffler, but it is still technically a muffler. It almost looks like a glass pack but it doesn't have the baffles that a glass back does which again you can see in the pics below that you can see pretty much straight through and you can't see anything in the muffler itself.
For those who are looking at a muffler and those who have an S197 Mustang, I will give a full review after I have driven around with them for a week or 2. But at first glance the finish of the axle backs look great. They have a cool stealthy looking black finish with absolutely massive 4 inch tips. As you can see below, I can fit my entire fist in these and I have fairly large hands. I may tape them off and coat them in plasti dip just to help protect them from the elements. But overall at first glance I really like them and they will be going on the car tomorrow morning. Here are the pics
