There is no way on God's green earth I would ever put a amimal through that. I would neuter a dog though. I have pit bull and a boston terrier.

Old Ruger looks like he has a good bloodline -many Dobes today have pointy muzzles, whichis an undesireable characteristic resulting from overbreeding for many years. Ruger's looks great.
The old lady and I never had kids, so the many dogs we've had over the years have beenlikeour "children". Among the many different dogs that have been part of our family, we've had two Dobermans and one Rottweiller. Since you said this is your first Dobe, I'll pass along some advice that I encourage you to heed.
Based on my experiences, I believe the most intelligent breed of dog is the Weimaraner, followed closely by Dobermans and Rottweillers (related to the Doberman). The most important thing to do with Rotts and Dobe's is to "socialize" them, as soon a possible, with other people and critters. In other words, expose Ruger to as manypeople (outside of the family), dogs and catsas you can while he's still a puppy. Don't worry about this diminishing his abilities as a guard dog later on - they're intelligent enough to be able to distinguish the good guys from the bad. Secondly, understand that these dogs expect to be treated as an equal member of the family. While not as potentially ferocious asRottweillers, Dobermans nevertheless do not take kindly to being abused, betrayed or crossed by their loved-ones. Of course youmust remind them from time-to-time that you're the boss, and they're the dog - just don't over do it. Lastly, these dogs must be given intellectual stimulation on aregular basis - they've got to be given "something" to do. If you do not provide them with this, you can rest assured that they will find something to amuse themselves on their own.
Personally, I don't think ear-cropping or tail-docking is a big deal. What I do believe to be a "big deal" is buying"fashionable"dogs from breeders. Untold numbers of Dalmatians, Rottweillers, Dobermans and Weimaraners have suffered because of popular movies and art, and I am just sickened by this. My wife and I are currently involved ina national Weimaraner rescue group, and the plight of these wonderful creaturesmakes mewant to puke. Just last night, we "overnighted" a couple of adult females who were enroute from kill shelters in the deep south to newhomes in Colorado. Sadly, this process is known as the "Weim Train" within the rescue organization.
While I'm on my soapbox, let me say that there are two breeds that DEFINATELY ARE NOTSUITABLE foruneducated people who are simply wanting a fashionable dog - Weimaraners and Dalmatians. If you must have one, believe me when I tell you that rescue groups have plenty available for adoption.

As you will learn, Dobermans are a very special breed as well.
