General Motors August Sales Climb 15 Percent As All Brands Post Strong Gains

General Motors reported its strongest monthly sales figure since September 2008 and its best monthly result this year, with sales up 14.7 percent year-over-year to 275,847 vehicles. In a positive sign, GM also said that retail sales rose 22 percent last month while fleet sales (often to rental-car companies) fell eight percent. And once again, the Chevrolet Silverado was the company’s top selling vehicle.
Winner: Chevrolet Spark, 4534 sales, up 72.4 percent
What it lacks in physical size and overall sales volume, the Chevrolet Spark more than made up for in terms of growth. The subcompact hatchback has enjoyed steady sales growth since it launched last year, and so far in 2013 the Spark has tallied 25,969 buyers. Later this year, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark will launch with new color choices and a continuously variable transmission in place of the current car’s four-speed automatic.
Winner: Cadillac XTS, 3533 sales, up 63.7 percent
The Cadillac XTS luxury sedan is picking up speed and managed its best sales month to date, with sales up 63.7 percent compared to a year ago. In fact, the XTS outsold the smaller, less expensive Cadillac ATS sedan last month. However, this result still puts the Cadillac XTS at 21,157 sales so far this year — behind every other Cadillac vehicle save the Escalade SUV.
Winner: Cadillac SRX, 7211 sales, up 38.6 percent
The luxury brand’s perennial bestseller continued its reign in August, with its best-ever August sales result. The Cadillac SRX also posted the second-biggest growth of any Cadillac, and one of the strongest year-over-year increases of any GM product last month. It may have helped that, according to Automotive News data, Cadillac offered zero-percent financing on nearly all its models last month.
Winner: Chevrolet Traverse, 9112 sales, up 35.1 percent
GM saw its crossover and large SUV segments improve considerably in August, and the Chevrolet Traverse was no exception. The three-row model’s strong gain last month (the second-highest growth of any Chevrolet) bolstered its year-to-date sales growth to 14.1 percent, compared to the first eight months of 2012.
Winner: GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, 5124 sales, up 34.7 percent
The giant, glitzy GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs managed to post one of GM’s highest year-over-year sales gains in August — even while the Yukon’s siblings, the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and Cadillac Escalade, enjoyed more modest gains. Overall, it was a good month for GM’s large SUVs, as the category overall saw its volume grow 29 percent year-over-year in August. Our spy photos indicate a new version of the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL will debut next year.
Winner: Chevrolet Silverado, 43,603 sales, up 13.9 percent
Its year-over-year gains were only modest, but the Chevrolet Silverado continues to be the top-selling GM product every month. The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, along with the 2014 GMC Sierra, both enjoyed healthy sales gains, with the GMC tallying 18,017 sales in August. While the Chevrolet Silverado beat out the Ram pickup truck range (33,009 sales) last month, it still couldn’t match the monumental success of the Ford F-Series (71,117 sales).
Loser: Chevrolet Corvette, 655 sales, down 45.9 percent
Corvette sales have fallen all year for one simple reason: the old model has ceased production, and deliveries of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray have yet to hit full strength. We expect the American sports car will post healthy numbers later this year and early in 2014 as the new Corvette becomes more readily available. For now, though, the nameplate’s sales are down 24.1 percent compared to the first eight months of last year.
