Default Fire in the Forest City!

In the wee hours of the morning Friday, I posted about a fire across the street in the daily blog. Its hard to find the time to post about it, but I knew I'd get around to it. If your interested, read this first:

http://www.lfpress.com/news/london/2...-16326451.html

That was the official press coverage. It saves me writing the story, but they didn't get the scoop that I did because I live at 23 The Ridgeway - straight across the street. And while some neighbours were evacuated, I remained photoing and videoing the whole fire. I was watching when the first cop pulled up. He was brave and charged right in to ensure no residents were left in the building. The photos were not great because smoke was thick and it was dark. Over exposing the shots proved tough because there was probably more then a dozen emergency vehicles on the street and their flashing lights killed the shots.
But here's some of what I got:

The video turned out better then the photos
Still in the very early stages of the fire, firefighters are organizing and planning their battle:

A lot of smoke! Power lines have been cut and firefighters begin to manuver the first of 2 ladder trucks over the blaze. This is difficult because of all the trees in the "Forest City" of London. The trees themselves pose a very real danger of igniting and spreading the fire, so 20 neighbourhood residents are evacuated. Its a very cold night and city transit (the city buses) are called in to temporarily house evacuees

The blaze spread to the front of the house and gives me a better angle. The brief dark flashes during the video are me snapping photos while videoing. It almost looks as if the trees have caught fire.

The fire appears to be pretty much under control at this point, but you can see the back of the roof still going. 5 hoses are visable blasting away and you can see how much water running down the house. The street flooded pretty good and I would imagine some other residents took water damage.

And finally, some photos of the aftermath:

It was fun! $300,000 dollars damage & nobody was seriously hurt - a few bruises to some brave and noble firefighters, but I'm sure they wear their wounds as badges of honor! You can actually see in some shots how firefighters were inside, on the second floor, under the burning roof in some shots! I'm not sure this fire wasn't intentionally lit, since the London Free Press article indicates the house was soon to be demolished. Its odd that the house had 8 apartments but only 2 occupants.

Did I ever tell the story about the time I burned down my apartment? It was also around 3am after I came home from the club and was hungry and...
ahhh... but that's another story....
