The back up battery is a 12 volt marine battery. The description info is:

Space, most homes around here have sump pits in the basement. To collect water that drains around the foundation of the house. Instead of allowing the ground water to damage the foundation. There's usually a main sump pump that works on the house electricity, and it pumps the water out when the water reaches a certain level. But you should have a backup system of some kind incase the power goes out. That's where a back up battery system comes in.

I'm still new to this myself. My previous home was 95-100 years old. Built during a time when there was no such thing as sump pumps in a house. So I'm still learning all this myself. The pit is about 16-20 inches around, and about 3 feet deep.
