Big tree coming down

$500 sounds like a lot of money at first. But it's a whole lot cheaper than the insurance deductables and damage costs would be if that limb fell on something. Or someone!
It doesn't look like there was much holding that limb up. It looks like it was only a matter of time. Taking the tree down now was the best thing to do.
I bet that hole in the tree must have been a favorite of squirrels, birds and such. Good hiding spot for them.

My grandmother had a similar tree in her front yard. They promised the wood to my dad. But once the tree was cut you could see carpender ants had hollowed the tree out. All that was standing was a shell.
One time I watched a guy single handed bring down a large tree in someone's back yard. With the closeness of the yard and neighbors, the man had two ropes and a chainsaw. He would determine which part of the tree he wanted to bring down next, tie the rope to that part while using the other rope as a safety I guess? He would run the rope through another part of the tree, then cut at the trunk. In about 1 hours time he had most of the top out of this tree.

i remember dropping a pine tree about that big a few years ago with my dad and a friend. it acutally started out as the original owner of our house's christmas tree, but got huge and was leaning towards the house. dad climbed up with this big a$$ rope and tied it about halfway up, we strung it down around a tree in our neighbors yard, and tied it to our old sazuki samuri. sliced into the tree and let the sammie yank it where we wanted it, and landed PERFECT, right on target!
