Big Decision

Big Decision
I have a job offer that would increase my income by about $20,000 a year. I used to work in the field that this job is in, but due to the economy (do not want to get political, so please don't) work dried up and I was laid off. I was unemployed for about nine months until I finally found work in a different industry. The thing is that the field I am in now is very unsatisfying to me. The field I was originally in was very satisfying and could potentially save lives and property.
My fear is that if I take the job, I don not want to end up in the same boat I was in before. I do not want to end up unemployed for an extended time like I was before.
I'm not sure what to do.

Best of luck. I know no matter what anyone says, it's tough to decide. At the end of the day, you have to go with your gut feeling on this and stick to it.

Btw... I like your avatar. I'm a Steelers fan from way back.
I second that. Unless you have a SOLID flag that the job offer could be "short" term, I think the fact you enjoy this job this offer presents and the money is WAY better, I'd say take it.

At 20k more put some aside and live like you are now once you have a safe cushion you wont need to stress about it. after taxes you would have at least a 10k net to help you find another job even if the better paying job only lasted a year.

I'd do what makes you happy...Life is to short..I'd rather work for less $'s & be happy that work 4 more $'s & be sad.
Life is a gamble, but helping others is a big reward.
Good Luck in your decision & in `life 4-Sure

I agree with Mr Grizzly Mint, 20K more allows you to:
- Set up a savings for bad times
- Provide better for your children
I'm not trying to talk you into the job, as I don't know all the details or live in your location. I watched a family member get enticed from a job he was good at and making great money, to a job he was equally as good at making more money for the company to downsize people about 1-2 months later (they even had him do an out of town trip that went very well). That mistake caused some bumps in the road for him (as now he had to work about 2 jobs to make ends meet).
We're never going to be able to give you the right answer on this. Look at the industry, look and see if the potential employer appears stable. Otherwise, what you've told us sounds like taking the new job offer is a win-win based on what little we know.
Best of luck with making your decision.

I agree with the others. Just prepare for the worst. Set up a savings and put a set amount in it every payday. That way if it dont go well you can have a little nest egg built up to get you through until you found a new job. I know its easier said than done to put money away but ive found if you set an amount and put it in savings right off the top it adds up quick.
