I have used some sort of spray grease remover and then a paint brush to agitate the dirt. I will place plastic over things I don't want to get wet and I will hose down the rest. Works alright but I haven't really taken my time with it otherwise it would be better.

You could try an engine degreaser, let it sit on a "warm" engine, then hose it off lightly.

For all of the other stuff that is left, a bunch of rags you don't care about and simple green.

Maybe its just me but won't that just make more of a mess? Using a lubricant and all to clean off things? Won't it attract dirt?
