I`d drive one...

Hyundai is already having a good year. Its Genesis sedan, which debuted last year to overwhelmingly positive reviews, was named the 2009 North American Car of the Year by a panel of automotive journalists last month at the Detroit Auto Show. Now, the South Korean automaker is releasing its first rear-wheel-drive coupe, also called Genesis, and is hoping for the same kind of success.

At the 2009 Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai announced it is already expanding its fledgling Genesis coupe lineup with the 2010 Genesis coupe R-Spec. A mid-model-year release, the R-Spec is designed to appeal to the tuner crowd, enthusiasts who want a low starting price and a car that can be modified to theiR-Specifications.

The Genesis coupe R-Spec will get most of its genetic material from the performance-oriented 2009 Genesis 2.0T Track model and will have a starting price of $23,750, $3000 less than the better-equipped 2.0T Track on which it is based. The engine will be the same: a 210-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that will deliver an estimated 30 mpg on the highway and a top speed of 137 mph. Like the 2.0T Track model, the R-Spec will come only with a 6-speed manual transmission. Other Genesis coupes will also offer a 5-speed automatic.

The R-Spec will take its mechanicals from the 2.0T Track, making it turn, brake and handle better, though certainly ride harder, than other models. The hydraulic steering will be quicker. Brembo brakes will do the stopping, with 13.4-inch front and 13-inch rear ventilated rotors and red 4-piston calipers at each corner. The racetrack-tuned suspension will feature higher-rate coil springs, firmer shock absorbers, an additional front strut brace and thicker front and rear stabilizer bars (25 mm front and 22 mm rear). The tires will be summer performance Bridgestone Potenzas, P225/40YR19 up front and P245/40YR19 at the rear, on gunmetal-finish alloy wheels. A Torsen limited-slip differential will also be standard.

To reduce weight and price, the R-Spec will not have several of the features of the Track or even the base model. Compared to the base model, the R-Spec will lack automatic headlights, cruise control, a trip computer, chrome interior accents, steering-wheel audio controls and a Bluetooth hands-free cell phone link.

No standard safety features will be lost, though. Safety equipment will include front side and curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, traction control, electronic stability control, a tire-pressure monitor and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

Other standard features will include air conditioning, driver’s seat lumbar adjustment, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift ****, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with six speakers, an iPod interface and USB and auxiliary input jacks. The R-Spec will be available in three colors: Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red.[8D]Space will take a Black ONE for a long term test

Also at the Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai announced that it is teaming with drift champion Rhys Millen Racing and Red Bull Energy Drink to campaign a specially prepared Genesis coupe in the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship series and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and at select Red Line Time Attack series events in 2009.

When Nissan's first Z-car arrived for 1970 as the Datsun 240Z, no one predicted the enormous acclaim this affordable sports car would enjoy. But over time and redesigns, Nissan lost its focus and the Z grew expensive and fat. That's why when the reworked 2003 Nissan 350Z drove back to basics, everyone applauded. Well now, for 2009 it's time for a Z update again. So, let's see if the crowd will still roar.
Avoiding the mistakes that ultimately doomed the first Z-car series, Nissan approached this iconic re-design with an eye toward maintaining balance, carefully adding technology to enhance performance and comfort while also trimming weight and size to retain its nimble and sporty nature.
Styling updates are somewhat subtle. At first glance, the overall shape is similar, with familiar proportions to the wide stubby nose and canopy-style cockpit. But the rear hatch angle is less steep now, and character lines like the upswept rear quarter windows and artful head- and tail-lamps add sizzle to what was becoming a bland design. It's racy, with a few bits borrowed from the big brother GT-R's insolent aggression.
At 100.4, almost 4 inches has been chopped from the 370Z's wheelbase. That was done by moving the rear wheels forward. The car is also shorter, slightly wider, and lower with a corresponding lower center of gravity.
Weight savings come from using aluminum for the doors, hood and hatch, as well as carbon-fiber for key structural braces and the shorter driveshaft. New technology and safety features add back a few pounds, but the net result is 95 pounds under the previous Z.
Motivation comes from Nissan's corporate dual-overhead-cam, 24-valve V6, now displacing 3.7 liters, hence the name change. The engine is also used in the Infiniti G37. Horsepower is up 26, now standing at 332. Torque bumps up a couple pound-feet, to 270. Transmitting power to the pavement is a new 7-speed paddle shifter automatic or our tester's 6-speed manual gear box with the world's first synchronized downshift rev-matching feature. This gizmo recognizes when a lower gear is selected and blips the throttle for smoother clutch engagement; much like heel-and-toeing, but without the fancy footwork. For the purists, it can be turned off. UP-shifting with the closely spaced gearbox results in 0 to 60 times of 5.1 seconds. The full quarter-mile flashes by in 13.7 seconds at 105 miles-per-hour.
Power delivery is smooth all the way to the 7500-RPM redline, and a noticeably deeper growl resonates from the Z's dual exhausts. We pushed the Z through sustained high-speed lapping around Savannah, Georgia's Roebling Road Raceway, where Nissan's new balancing act really paid off.
A new double-wishbone front suspension and stiffer 4-link rear setup combine with new "high-response" shocks at each corner to reduce impact harshness and improve grip.
The tighter body structure, smaller footprint and refined suspension all combine for handling that is easily on par with much pricier machines.
The overall attitude is neutral with sharp turn-ins, responsive steering and just enough power-on over steer to keep things entertaining but still under control.
The 370Z squirts from corner to corner with a fluid grace, connecting the driver with the road in a way all but forgotten by today's hyper-fast, do-it-all-for-you supercars, including the GT-R. And it brakes fast too: a short 119 feet on average from 60 to 0 with a nice firm pedal.
Perhaps more impressive is how the Z handles routine driving. Three days on the track and then fifteen hours straight on the Interstate and zero complaints. Especially with Government Fuel Economy ratings of 18 city/26 highway and a cruising range of more than 450 miles. The driver sits in a still cozy cockpit with better-quality materials and more upscale details in the stitching and trim. And, yes, there is finally a proper glove box.
The standard cloth bucket seats have anti-slip inserts, but our touring model upgrades with leather trim plus seat power and heat. Lateral support is good without being too firm.
Tach and speedo needles spin in a brushed-look hooded pod which still moves with the tilt wheel. Ancillary gauges reside in a signature triple cluster atop the center dash, stacked, in our car, above touch-screen navigation, a Bose CD stereo with XM, and rotary ***** for the climate controls.
The intrusive strut brace that once divided and diminished the cargo area has been moved forward and incorporated behind the seats, along with a small parcel shelf and a pair of bins. Pricing for the 2009 370Z starts at a budget-friendly $29,930 for the manual trans base car and climbs to a still-reasonable $35,760 for a Touring Edition automatic.
It speaks volumes that the Z was our favorite track car in a pit lane shared with stars from Audi, BMW and Porsche. The Nissan 370Z is much more than just retro-cool. It rockets back to what sport cars were meant to be: Eye catching and nothing but fun to drive. It is, in a word , amazing!

2010 Chevrolet Camaro V-6 running 6.1 0-to-60, 14.2 sec. quarters

We're just hours away from our first drive of the V-6-powered model of the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, but wanted to let you know about some initial details of the Camaro with the six-banger on board.
The car we'll be writing about is a 99-percent prototype, V-6 Camaro. We'll be sampling both six-speed automatic and manual flavors. Chevy is being coy so far about final horsepower numbers, but says it will be in the 300-plus range for the 3.6L high-feature V-6 found in the Cadillac CTS and other GM produts.
Initial performance numbers from Chevy indicate that the V-6 Camaro will move from 0-to-60 in 6.1 sec., although they're aiming to get it to 5.9 or so. The quarter mile comes in roughly 14.2 sec. at 98 mph.
The Camaro will come with multiple wheel/tire options for both the V-6 and V-8 models. Standard issues shoes will be 18-inch all seasons, with 19-inch all seasons, 20-inch summers and if you're really looking for that extra tread 21-inch summers will eventually become available.
For those worried about the Camaro's fuel economy, the V-6 model should check in at about 19 city/27 highway, with pricing starting in the low to mid $20K range.
Pictured above is a shot of the V-6 Camaro with its two bogies the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Ford Mustang GT, along with shots of the V-8-powered RS model below. Stay tuned later today for our complete first drive report and more photos of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V-6.

Good informational posts.

I think the Genesis Coupe V6 will be a great car. I have actually been influencing my girlfriend to consider one. I really liked it at the Chicago Auto show.

The new Z will run laps around the V6 Camaro, Mustang and Challenger, without even sweating. It will also handle a lot better too.

From a previous Hyundai owner, the new Genesis sedan and coupe are sweet cars. A while back i heard that the coupe was just a concept and wasnt gunna be made. With that styling and a killer warranty the genesis isnear thetop of my "want" list lol.
