2009 Chevrolet Traverse
Program #2812

No brand has been hurt more by the fall from grace of big SUVs than Chevrolet. Fortunately, Chevy was already working on an alternative and it's now ready to roll. The seven and eight passenger Chevrolet Traverse is the fourth full-size crossover utility based on GM's advanced Lambda platform. But, while Traverse may be the youngest of its clan, being last out of the shoot has its advantages.
Making multi-purpose utility vehicles more fuel efficient is the top priority of every manufacturer. The result is a sea of new, lighter weight crossover utilities, with the latest family-size edition being the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse crossover.
Like the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook, the Traverse is a full-size seven and eight passenger hauler. But, being the newest team member, it was designed to be even more efficient.
Aero improvements to Traverse include a smoother flush-fitting grille and headlights, a reshaped hood, and a splitter in the front air dam.
The front roof pillars and wheel openings were also refined, as were the tail-lights, rear fascia, and rear spoiler. The result is a drag coefficient of 0.33; the lowest in the large crossover segment to date.
First to the segment are integrated Blind Spot Mirrors, standard on the Traverse. They worked nearly as well as electronic blind spot systems.
Having a sleek shape like Traverse means nothing if you have a gas guzzler under it, so GM has added direction injection to the Lambda's twin-cam 3.6-liter V6. In the Traverse it delivers 281 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque in single-exhaust LS and LT models, and 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque in the dual exhaust LTZ.
Direct injection, new to large domestic crossovers, delivers both more power and economy than the previous Lambda V6. Traverse Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 17 city/24 highway with front-wheel drive, and 16 city/23 highway with all-wheel-drive. Our front-drive LTZ drew a solid average of 21 miles-per-gallon on regular gas. That's better than a Tahoe Hybrid. All models use a 6-speed automatic with markedly improved shift manners.
While easier on gas, the three-row Traverse still provides the kind of room and versatility demanded from a full size utility. Hard trim and seat fabrics are not as upscale as the Buick Enclave, but it's a similar very efficient control layout, with a big, clear, if simple gauge cluster.
Ditto the Smart Slide second row seats, in twin buckets or split bench, and adult-sized third-row bench.
And Traverse can be ordered with plenty of amenities. Our LTZ sported heated and cooled front seats, a Bose audio system with Bluetooth, satellite radio and traffic, tri-zone climate controls and touch screen navigation.
DVD entertainment for the second and third-row seats is available as an option.
Cargo space access is by the LTZ's standard power lift-gate. It measures 24.4 cubic feet behind the third row; 68.8 cubic feet behind the second row; and 116.4 cubic feet with both rows folded. Again that's more than Tahoe. Traverse towing capacity, 5,200 pounds, is a thousand less, however,
When driving the Traverse, we quickly came to appreciate the stable sedan-like feel delivered by its front MacPherson strut and independent rear linked H-Arm suspension. Electronic stability and traction control are standard.
The direct-injection V6 with revised 6-speed also delivers power better. 0-60 times have improved from adequate to good at 7.8 seconds. A quarter-mile of 16.2 seconds at 89 miles-per-hour is also better.
Handling is solid, with quick turn-in speed and moderate front push. The steering has a very direct feel, delivering quick response to driver inputs.
As with other Lambda-based vehicles, braking is stable, and while a 135 foot stopping distance from 60 to 0 is also consistent, it is also longer than it should be.
Pricing for the Chevrolet Traverse is broad and competitive. They range from $28,990 for the front drive LS, to 41,810 for the LTZ with all-wheel drive.
As gas prices go up and SUV sales go down, leading people mover brands like Chevrolet have no choice but to make their big family haulers more fuel efficient.
The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse is a step in the right direction. A direction that might even make the full-size utility segment thrive once again. What do you think ?Post `it[:-]

Default RE: 2009 Chevy Traverse ?

I'm not much on minivans or cross-overs. Not in the position where I need one (no kids). But if I was in the market for one, I'd take it. 288 horsepower! Gotta love that.

I certainly wouldn't buy a Honda Pilot like some other person did. *cough*Mickey*cough*. lol

2010 Chevrolet Camaro V-6 - First Drive Review
This pony is neither fish nor fowl.
BY MICHAEL AUSTIN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM DREW
November 2008
Attention, IROC-Z enthusiasts: the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will not be available with your beloved T-top. If this is hugely disappointing, well, it may finally be time to put on a shirt with a collar, sell your Skynyrd CDs, and scissor the mullet.
In reviving the Camaro, Chevy is doing all it can to make the born-again car remind everyone of the sharp, cleanly styled 1967 original, rather than the more awkward later versions that seemed like accessories to tank-top wear and excesses in facial hair. This writer, the semi-proud owner of a 1995 Z28, knows intimately all the social assumptions that go with late-model Camaro ownership.
GM is of course milking the revival for as many stories as it can get from us, hence we got a first drive in a V-6-powered Camaro prototype, which we promptly piloted to the the Car and Driver 10Best loop in the Michigan woods. The V-8 experience will follow soon. Manipulative intentions aside, the point of our early exposure was also to prove that even the base Camaro is deserving of more enlightened consideration, while still being powerful and capable enough to rock your face.
As we noted in our September issue, the V-6 features direct injection and dual over-head cams, the rear suspension is an independent multilink, and both transmissions (an Aisin manual and a GM automatic) are six-speeds. Lest you think this setup is the sort of wine-and-cheese import-sedan formula that will make the Camaro a card-carrying metrosexual, Chevy promises the V-6 will make no fewer than 300 horsepower and that blasting from 0 to 60 mph should take 6.1 seconds, with the quarter-mile breezing by in 14.5 seconds at 97 mph.
(I think it could get into the 5 sec zero 2 sixty, &
1/4 in the 13teens : ) WoW...Watch Out Monte Carlo : )
Even if those numbers are conservative, the 3800-pound V-6 Camaro should easily out-drag the V-6 versions of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, but it will eat the dust of a lighter Ford Mustang Bullitt, a V-8, and the more powerful Dodge Challenger SRT8, both of which cover the quarter-mile about a second quicker.
Though the Camaro lacks the cojones to run with the big boys, it does make a compelling case as a decent sports car. Around the 10Best loop, the Camaro showed remarkable poise, with the suspension handling the pockmarked roads with hardly any disturbance to the cabin. The chassis is less jumpy than that of the Mustang but far more communicative than in the Challenger, and although the Camaro is nearly as wide as the Dodge it doesn’t feel as big.
We drove two different wheel-and-tire combinations: 18-inch wheels with BF Goodrich Traction T/As on an automatic-transmission car and 19-inch Pirelli PZero Neros with the manual; either choice has a section width of 245. When the Camaro goes on sale—the target is first day of March 2009—20-inch wheels and tires will be available with the RS package. At this point in the Camaro‘s development (about 99 percent complete, according to Chevy), the 18-inch tires are preferable, offering more steering feel and more predictable handling. On either set of tires, though, the Camaro turns in easily before setting into minor understeer that is easily cured with a stomp on the throttle. The engine responds willingly, although the high-pitched tone of the exhaust note feels out of place – our inner car lover appreciates the racy smoothness but our inner Camaro owner longs for the deep rumble of a V-8.

My question on the Traverse is: Can GM sell enough MORE of the SAME vehicle (4th from that platform) to cover the cost of development and tooling? I KNOW the cost of tooling, and it ain't cheap! I believe this is just another point of loosing money for GM. FOUR vehicles all the same? Why can't they make one or two REALLY high quality vehicles with LOTS of options and several trim levels, instead of 4 that they will probably lose money on. I HOPE that I'm wrong, but the numbers show otherwise.

The Camaro is HOT, but it's something that again is too late! Back in 64, F__d sold HOW MANY Rustangs before the 67 Camaro came out? The Rustang NEVER went away, and now is one of the most popular models F__d puts out! But the General, in it's infinite wisdom, dropped the Camaro AND Firbird TOTALLY in favor of what, mini-vans and LARGE SUV's? BRILLIANT! AND, they've been showing us previews for 2 years now. WHERE IS IT? GM screwed up BIG TIME in stopping production of these two cars. I'm guessing it will have the typical 1st year bugs like ANY GM car has. I'd wait a couple of years to by one. No different than the 6th gen Montes.

By the way, where is it being made? Oshawa? Where was it developed? Australia? What happened to Detroit? Too many drugs? We all know that the Oshawa plant puts out the highest quality cars in the GM line. But why? Can't US labor build cars as good? Is the UAW the problem? These are REAL questions that US labor NEEDS to get answers for.

Chevy Camaro Accessories
[:-]

The Chevy Camaro has always been a car that owners love to personalize. The all-new, 2010 Camaro carries on that tradition with a diverse lineup of accessories and performance components ready at launch.
[sm=Flahssssss.gif][sm=gears.gif][sm=Flahssssss.gif]

Ranging from interior accessories and audio/electronic upgrades to exterior styling accessories,

21-inch wheel-and-tire kits and parts that enhance performance, the Camaro “add-on†portfolio offers something for every taste and budget. The accessories and performance parts can be ordered and installed at the dealership and, in some cases, their cost can be rolled into the vehicle’s financing for a seamless, one-stop personalization experience.

Camaro designers and engineers worked from the earliest stages of vehicle development to design, test and validate the accessories and performance parts to GM production-vehicle specifications. They are manufactured with production-quality

materials, too, so customers are assured of original-equipment-quality parts with the best fit and finish for their Camaro. The performance parts are 50-state legal, for worry-free emissions compliance.

Here’s a look at the all-new portfolio of Camaro accessories and performance parts:

Interior trim kits – For Camaros equipped with the factory illumination package, Camaro’s accessory

interior trim kits offer colors that enable owners to match or contrast the vehicle’s exterior color. They’re available in yellow, orange, white and silver.

Interior accessories – A variety of accessories bolster both the style and convenience of the Camaro’s cabin, while helping maintain its original condition. They include floor mats, sill plates and more. The deluxe carpeted floor mats feature embroidered Camaro logos, while the sill plates add a distinctive appearance and added protection when entering the car. A cargo-area floor mat, cargo net and a smoker’s package are also available.

Audio and electronics – Customers can take the

Camaro’s technology to a higher level with upgraded audio and lighting systems, as well as remote starting. The upgraded audio system brings greater features and capability, while a peripheral device interface module allows portable players to play through the audio system. Remote starting brings the convenience of letting the vehicle heat up on a cold morning or cool down on a hot day. Also, Camaro’s accessory footwell and cupholder lighting kit delivers customizable, colored ambient lighting for a premium, high-tech interior appearance.

Car covers – Protecting the Camaro from the elements and UV rays is easy with custom-contoured car covers. They are designed to fit the Camaro’s contours and are available in red or black – each with stylish, heritage-inspired black stripes.

Exterior accessories – Customers can create a unique look for their Camaro with a diverse lineup of exterior accessories, from a grille insert and satin nickel fuel door to color-matched splash guards and a complete ground effects kit. And don’t forget to check out the stylish, wing-style rear spoiler.

The ground effects package creates a dramatic, ground-hugging look for the Camaro, and comes in a great, Metallic Grey color that accents the car’s original color. The wing-style rear spoiler complements the ground effects’ competition-ready appearance. All Camaro exterior accessories are designed and manufactured to the same quality and durability standards as regular-production components.

Stripe kits – The heritage-inspired 2010 Camaro is accented perfectly with accessory stripe kits. They give the Camaro a classic look and contemporary style. Available styles include hockey stick-style, hood and hockey stick-style and rally-style stripes in a variety of colors.

Wheels and tires – The 2010 Camaro comes with a family of attractive, 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheels, but Camaro enthusiasts can take it a step further with great-looking, racing-inspired 21-inch wheels and complementing performance tires. The wheel design features a contemporary split five-spoke center that is available in two finishes. The first is a black-painted finish and the other has a machined-aluminum finish with black accents. They are offered in an 8.5-inch width for V-6 models; and 8.5-inch front and 9.5-inch rear widths for SS models.

Center caps, chrome lug nuts and necessary tire pressure monitor sensors are available seperately. For convenience, complete kits of wheels, tires, center caps, lug nuts and pressure sensors are available.

Performance parts – GM Performance Parts (GMPP) designers and engineers worked with the Camaro engineers to develop emissions-legal bolt-on components that would accentuate and enhance overall performance.

GMPP developed air box, header and exhaust kits, as well as complementing short-throw shifters for manual-transmission applications. Also available are color-coordinated engine covers that add a dash of color-coordinated style under the hood. All the components are 50-state emissions legal, with CARB EO numbers where required.

Details of the performance parts include:

Air box kits include an open-element, performance air filter for lower restriction and a great-looking, performance-style housing, with a chrome lid for a true tuner appearance. They’re available for V-6 and V-8 applications
Exhaust kits upgrade the look and sound of the Camaro and are offered in quieter street-legal systems and off-road-only kits. Different applications are designed to work with or without the Camaro accessory ground effects package
Headers enable exhaust gases to be carried away from the engine quicker, boosting the engine’s airflow efficiency and overall performance. GMPP’s bolt-on header kit for V-8 engines is emissions-legal and a simple bolt-in replacement for the factory exhaust manifolds. Match them with one of GMPP’s exhaust kits for even greater performance
Short-throw shifter. A greater feeling of control comes with a precise, quick-acting shifter, and GMPP’s kits for both V-6 and V-8 models deliver sharper and quicker throws between gears. They were developed with legendary shifter manufacturer Hurst, so they complement great performance with classic styling
Engine cover kits give the Camaro’s V-6 and V-8 engines a stylish, show-quality upgrade. They’re available to match most exterior colors, allowing customers to complement or contrast the color to suit individual style. They are easy to install and don’t interfere with oil fill or other common maintenance access points
