Cars Gone Wild—SEMA’s Most Outrageous Rides
You never know what you may see/read on the MCF,
especially `if it was posted by the `kid

Click image to enlargeByEvan GriffeyIn an atmosphere where trick, one-off fabrication is commonplace and the latest hot cars litter the Las Vegas Convention Center to the point of relegating them to yawn-producing fixtures, standing out can be a challenge. The struggle to rise above the masses can drive some to extreme, bizarre, uncanny and creepy creations. Scouring the 26 miles of aisles at the SEMA Show uncovered the following singularly peculiar automotive creations, which run the gamut from creative, nostalgic and misguided to full-on overkill.

World’s Fastest Rolls-Royce

This 1970 Silver Shadow was a real crowd-pleaser, enjoying standing-room-only audiences. The old-timer has a distinct split personality. Approach from behind and the distinct boot and classic Rolls-Royce lines generate an aura of sophistication. Come upon the car bonnet first and it’s a totally different story. Any visions of Grey Poupon and a leisurely day at the country club are replaced with barbecue sauce and burnouts down Main Street, as a gleaming roots-style 671 blower towers over the hood. This Rolls is motivated by a 572-inch Chrysler Hemi V8 that is also fitted with nitrous-oxide injection. Owners Tod Weston and Nancy Olson report there’s 1,350 horsepower at the ready. The British bomber rides on a Chris Alston chassis with an Air Ride Technologies suspension providing the proper stance. The cabin retains its Rolls-Royce elegance with a custom Hot Rod Interiors leather interior, four TVs and a Billet Specialties steering wheel.

Scion has always marched to the beat of a different drummer, but the customized cars in its SEMA booth are beating the drums, not marching to them. The Neu-Vintage Scion tC by Eddie Hahm reaches back to post-war hot rods of the late ‘40s and early ‘50s for its inspiration. This was a time when speed ruled and the salt flats were the epicenter of automotive performance. Since many rodders of the day were fresh out of the war, aircraft technology was embraced to better the breed. Hahm’s Scion is an eclectic mix of vintage styling cues and modern mechanical technology. Some of the visual highlights include the body’s bare metal finish, extensive use of real rivets, an aluminum land-speed-style front spoiler, leather hood straps and Mooneyes “peep” mirrors. The use of Rally America B52 McLean-style wire wheels and throwback bias-ply tires from Coker complete the look. The theme continues in the cabin, where aluminum is again the material of choice, with custom bomber-style bucket seats, riveted aluminum paneling and liberal use of military canvas. The tC is no empty promise, as its 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine has been fitted with speed parts. The head was yanked, ported and polished, fitted with Brian Crower cams, stainless valves and titanium retainers. Induction was addressed with an AEM cold-air intake, while exhaust flow has been enhanced with a one-off 02 Motorsports header.

At home on the ranch makes for an intense motoring experience if you haul your hay with the halftrack Hummer from N-Fab and Allout Offroad. The 150 M12A halftrack system from Mattracks bolts onto the driveline of four-wheel-drive trucks, “improving” off-road tenacity. This flamed, lime green machine is really over the top, with chromed suspension and undercarriage parts and a hood-mounted TV screen that can be viewed only when the hood is tilted open. Inside, a white leather and ostrich interior is joined by a custom center console that is home to an extravagant audio system featuring an Alpine head unit.

The Ruthless Cartel Scion xD from Drag Cartel Industries puts a hip-hop twist on the open-air driving experience, which blossomed in the ‘60s. The xD features a four-inch chop on the roof, B-pillar deletion and a carved-out roof panel to let the sun shine in. The doors have been smoothed and welded shut, and Jerk Design worked its magic on the orange graphics and paint. The scheme is the perfect backdrop for the Scion’s trick rolling stock, namely custom 20x8 Cartel-designed two-color 100-spoke wire wheels and Toyo Proxes4 tires. The car’s stance can be quickly tuned via a Master Image air-bag suspension system. The cockpit is also a step back in time, with ‘60s hot-rod-style, low-back buckets joined by a custom Cartel-fabbed love seat in the back. The interior is stitched in period white leather with earth-toned piping. Alpine audio gear pumps the tunes from strategically placed speakers. Go-fast goodies include a TRD intake, TRD muffler and trick Drag Cartel header system.

The Five Axis Design Yaris Club is a throwback to the days of open-cockpit club racers. The key to pulling off the look is the Hardtop Tonneau Conversion, which works in accordance with an exposed TRD gauge cluster modified for use as a stand-alone readout, and the racing-stripe graphics. Body mods consist of Japanese domestic-market front and rear bumpers, taillights and fog lights from a Vitz. Rolling stock consists of Five:AD S6.F wheels wrapped with 225/45-17 Yokohama tires and backed by GReddy mini 6-piston brakes. Tein Super Street dampers and a TRD strut tower brace fortify the suspension. Under the hood, the diminutive 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is force fed by a TRD/TTE supercharger kit that boosts power by about 66 horsepower, putting total output at 166. The blower package has been augmented with a GReddy exhaust and TRD intake.

Chassis Tech’s Smart FourTwo Passion flexes a wild Panda ghost flame job and huge wheels to makes its statement. Yes, its 15-inch rolling stock featuring blacked-out nine-spoke alloys wrapped with 175/55-15 ContiPro Contact tires is living large in Smart terms. Chassis Tech dropped the FourTwo with a ride-height adjustable air-bag suspension. A Soundstream Audio stereo system pumps the tunes as the miserly Smart cruises Main Street.

This “Back to the Future”-looking vehicle is the brainchild of Dean Arnold. The car is a highly stylized 1961 Ford Thunderbird that has been given a prototype makeover. The retro-futuristic expression features a Plexiglas bubble top, long sweeping tailfins and an aggressive side-pipe exhaust treatment. Running gear consists of a ‘60s vintage 302-inch V8. Arnold and his car hail from the Northwest, but we were unable to see what he and the car were promoting; maybe they are just enjoying the desert air?

With a body that looks like it spends most of its time in the gym, Studie AG’s retina-scorching Z4 M Coupe is hard to miss. The wide-body treatment comes compliments of genuine BMW Motorsports carbon-fiber body tuning parts. Front and rear bumpers, side skirts and aggressive fender flares are joined by a SARD rear wing. The bright green Bavarian runs 19x9 and 19x9.5 BBS RE aluminum shod with Yokohama Advan Sport rubber. The Advan’s contact patch is challenged by Sach coilovers, Auto Refine anti-roll bars and stout Brembo brakes featuring 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston units in the rear. Thanks to a K&N Ram Charger intake and Arqray titanium exhaust, output is rated at 330 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque.
