2014 Corvette with LSX Power to Race Ultra Street
By Scott Parker
Chevy High Performance, May 09, 2014
If you thought Rodney Massengale was quick in the LSX Real Street C5 Corvette, just wait until you get a load of his 2014 Corvette that will be competing in Ultra Street. This C7 plans to take no prisoners.
Rodney and the crew at RPM Transmissions are no strangers to fast Corvettes. Matter of fact, if you’ve gone single digits in a C5 or C6 Corvette, it is most likely that you have used RPM’s driveline components. These diehard drag racers are about as competitive as they come, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they purged more than just their nitrous bottles prior to the green light to gain an advantage. That’s why we weren’t the least bit surprised to hear what an all-out, no-bolt-left-unturned type of Corvette build they were planning. And using a no-mile 2014 Corvette to do it – that has Rodney Massengale written all over it.
Ultra Street is a limited power adder class in the YellowBullet.com/Duck X series. The fastest cars run 5.0 to 5.4-seconds to the 1/8-mile. Rodney’s 2014 Corvette should be among them thanks to a Chevrolet Performance LSX block, bored and stroked to 440 cubic-inches (the class limit). A solid roller camshaft and Jesel valvetrain were the natural choices for the all-out race motor. All Pro 12-5 cylinder heads and cast intake provide the airflow, which is enhanced by an Induction Solutions Sledgehammer nitrous plate. The LSX motor is mated to a Coan converter, RPM-built Powerglide, and custom Driveshaft Shop 9-inch transaxle setup (yes, the C7's IRS is intact).
The real story is in the chassis prep, since there aren’t exactly a lot of 2014 Corvette racecars floating around. Farks Supercars C6 spindles and lower control arms, modified by RPM to fit the C7, squeeze on 15-inch Weld wheels. TRZ Motorsports C6 upper, lower control arms and spindles do the same in the front, bolted to a custom K-member fabricated by RPM. Aerospace brakes all around were another necessary component to fitting the drag wheels and dropping a few pounds. AFCO shocks will be used to help tune the aluminum chassis, which is mated to a unique chromoly 25.5-spec roll cage that is bolted to it just like Mark Carlyle’s C6 Z06 (RPM customer and LSX record-holder).
We'll keep you updated as this C7 prepares to hit the track. RPM has a house full of fast Corvettes, including the recent purchase of an Outlaw Radial C6. The C7 should tuck nicely between the C6 and the C5 in terms of e.t., but is still #1 as far as we are concerned.
