Trunk Lid
Duane with a 2003 Monte Carlo SS.
Trunk latch releases but the lid does NOT open fully. It just sits there as though it is still closed. I have replaced the 2 struts with ones that are for lids with spoiler and the lid still does not open fully. Is there a heavy duty strut or am I missing something?? I even sprayed silicone on all moving parts to no avail. Thank you.

A few things....
1 - I have bought generic replacement lift struts for the trunk that depending on the outside temp, that trunk flies up. They last about 6 months because the head of at least one snaps due to the trunk flying up and hyper extending the lift. What stinks is that this problem always happens outside of warranty.
2 - As a result of #1, I have replaced the lift struts with genuine GM (which I believe is made by a company called "Stratus". When you pop the trunk, it is only to lift a tiny bit so you can see it is popped (if it lifts at all). The lift strut will help raise the lid. If you pay close attention, you will see when the lift struts are lifting the lid without your help, as they almost end their travel, they slow down to NOT hyper extend the lift strut (and avoid cracking the plastic head). And lastly, the lid will hold up and takes a small level of effort to lower it (avoiding issues with wind blowing the lid down on your head.

The originals on my 06 SS were shot so last year I replaced both and did the the hood strut too - went with all Genuine GMs and it made a huge difference. Pic below of an original (top) and the new Genuine GM replacement (bottom). Both are the exact same manufacturer, mfr. part number and made in USA.
