Default Noob here, let the ball breaking begin...

......first off, I dont even own a Monte, yet. I am in the market for an 86-88 SS, have always loved the cars and since my 94 impala ss is stil being put back together (dropping a viper t56 and custom built 383 stroker in it, ill post some pics if thats allowed) I need some classic american fun in my life to hold me over till that beast is back on the road.

Here's the thing, i know jack about these cars, but have noticed that you can find some very clean, unmolested examples for under $6k.

What I'm asking is just the basics, what should i look out for, what are the obvious problems, how are they on gas and insurance, reliablilty, so on and so forth.

Seeing as I am new, I am fully prepared to have everyonecrap in my hat, so bring it on, its all in good fun.

Eric

Heh.. Welcome to the forums.

First off. The mods hate swearing.. Might want to edit that post.. The forum is supposed to be family freindly.

You dont own a monte yet? No big deal. We have quite a few members online here that have the older montes that im sure can help you out with your project.

WELCOME! check out ebay for a good deal on an ss.pretty cheap I think. as far as problems... well, the 305 is the biggest one for me.Havent had any other trouble with mine since I have owned it. Well, none til I started modifyingit...hehe. Insurance is cheap cause the car is old.Cant remember for sure what my gas mileage was on the 305 motor.I'd guess... 16 or 17mpg.Maybeyou can post ur Impala pics somewhere here if the mods are cool with it. I'd like to see it! Was always a fan of those cars not to mention a good stroked small block!

Yeah im not crazy about the 305 either, but you can pick up a budget build 350 for under 3K these days, so it may come up in the future. I am looking to make this my daily driver, I picked up a used 97 SL500 mercedes a few months ago for that purpose, and the car is just too damn small, not to mention it costs an arm and a leg to fix it anytime something breaks. I just love full framed american cars,I sold my 68 Cadillac Deville convertible to raise cash for the benz, what a mistake!

Welcome, this is a pretty well self-moderated *****-free zone.

We have great Mods so don't worry about us.

Just be a Monte Lover and all will be well.

Welcome to the Monte Carlo Forum Eric from NY.
The best part about THIS forum IS the fact that there are BUNCHS of classic Montes here, and not just 2000+ models. Personally, I prefer the front wheel drive cars (tail draggers as I call them), as I drive 100+mi/day commuting, 6 days/wk usually, and the roads get BAD in the winter, as they do in NY. Also the gas milage is better, usually 25-28mpg.
My '01 SS LE on Michelin Energy tires was THE best handling car in the snow I've ever had!
If I lived farther south, I'd drive a RWD car, but i don't.

hey, welcome to the site,

the most important thing that i know of to look for is that there's no rust! and no rust under the car too, make sure ther's no bondo work done to the car either

do a tune up on it when you get it and change all the fluids as well
