Welcome to the site. If it is backfiring through the carb it sounds like the timing is off. It could be the distributor is turned to far one way or the other. I would replace the timing chain because I think they are pretty inexpensive and then do some research on timing a gm v8. Unless your just gonna yank it and replace it. Good luck. It can be frustrating
