Agreed, gas is expensive, but I wont drive the car much, or far so im not too worried about the car sucking up too much fuel. I think 3.73 is also the way to go, but the motor does like to be wound up to make power. I just dont want to spend the money on the gears and be disappointed.

Welcome to the site.
Ok...here is my opinion on gears. Since the car is going to be street driven and at the track some. I would stick with the 2.88 gears and keep that in mind when building the engine. Yes, with 2.88 gears you will be a dog off the line but depending on how you build the engine it might help you with traction. (think about more torque to help you get moving then your gears will help you at top end).
Ok the reason why I say keep your stock gears is because of gas milage but I also believe in a twisted theory of there being two races in the 1/4 mile. The first one is the first 1/8 mile and the second is of course the second 1/8 mile. You may lack in the first 1/8 mile but you will catch them in the second 1/8. Ok now I am going to give an example to kinda show you what I am talking about. My friend has a N/A Bonnie with stock 2.83 (ish, I know they are highway gears. He is a nightmare on the highway) and afew mods to his engine. Me with a pretty much bone stock Monte supercharged. We was comparing timeslips. Keep in mind that stock vs stock I have about 40 hp and torque on him. I don't know how much his mods give him. (hv3, pcm and afew others that I am probably forgetting). In the first 1/8 mile I gained 8/10s of a sec. on him but in the second 1/8, I only gained 4/10s of a sec. Even tho I had more hp and torque then him his gears was helping him out on the back half of the track. So if he adds some more torque to get him moving faster and alittle more hp then he should be even with me (stock) in the quarter.
I hope this makes sense and I hope it helps. I have worked a 14 hour day and have to get up in 7 hours for work :P But if you are building that engine then keep that in mind or if you have already build that engine then might look for some simple mods to do to pick up some torque. (perhaps exhaust or a cheap supercharger system..I don't know what you can do to the engine and having trouble thinking atm.)

Well I went out to work with my friend sunday on race cars. He is currently building 3 cars. 1- late model, and 2 street stocks. Street stocks locally are mostly made from g-body cars. So I started asking him about somethings. Basically I have parts laying around that he could use, and saturday I found some parts around his shop that I would love to have. Things he has that I would like to get my hands on for now are a 10-bolt posi, and chevy ported and polished fuellie heads from a vette. But he in the late model class they haft to run gm crate motors. A complete crate motor dyno's out at 405 to 425hp. He also said if you change the cam you could push close to 500h.p. I really like the crate motors, and the current 383 in my car was a motor I bought from him out of a race car he sold years ago. So he needs to buy a motor or have the motor he has rebuilt for one of his street stocks. If he takes it to a guy locally that does the best work It would cost him @ $5,000. I'm thinking of offering him a deal. I give him my 383 with @ 600 street miles on it, plus some other parts I have that he can use, for a crate motor. I've had alot of issues with that 383 he sold me, mostly top end cylinder head issues. I'd be happy to swap him for a gm crate motor.
