Default New member dying for help on 2006 mc ls!

First off, I would like to thank the community of montecarloforum.com for having me. I can not wait to take my knowledge on Monte Carlos to the next level. Hopefully it can keep my Monte running for a while longer which is why I am here.

I have a 2006 Monte Carlo LS. It has about 153,000 miles on it. I bought the car almost two years ago at 123,000 miles. I am starting to run into some problems now. Some I know exactly what they are and will be fixed as soon as I can come up on some cash. Others, however are a little difficult for me to diagnose. Here are a list of my problems. Maybe the community can help me out a bit here:

1) Rumbling and shaking of the vehicle when I press on the brakes.
2) Clicking inside the steering column as I turn the wheel.
3) When the car is at a stop while the heat is on, it will start to blow out cool air, unless car is in motion.
4) Clicking inside the dash when switching the temp from cold to hot or vice versa. The dash will also create a clicking sound for a while once car is started.

I graduate from college this may. I do plan on getting a new car for graduation, however I would still love to use this car as a work vehicle. Not to mention I do not pay a note on it, so I would like to keep it running as long as possible. If there is any recommendations anyone may have to offer, I am more than happy to read them. I really appreciate anyone taking their time to hear me out and read this. Have a great morning, afternoon, evening, or night.

Welcome to the forum!

These are some common issues with these cars , except maybe the heat thing. But your first 2 symptoms should be easy to fix.

1) Warped front rotors

2) Intermediate steering shaft. These always give problems on these cars, but it has become a problem on many cars and Dorman makes several different ones now including the one for your car. Dorman quality is questionable though. You only other choice is the dealer part. Search these forums and you find more help on replacing it or trying to fix the one in your car.

3 & 4) Both symptoms sound like a "blend door actuator" that is stuck or missing a few teeth on the gear. The actuator is a little geared motor that switches a door between external fresh air (cold at this time of year) and warmer air that passed through the heater core. I'm pretty sure Dorman makes these too (they call it an air door actuator). Its probably stuck half open between cold and hot air channels.

Welcome to the forum! Yep Junior's advice is sound and a good place to start in solving your issues

My 04 Monte had to have the steering shaft replaced once too, and it sounded like what you describe.

Rotors are not too hard to replace yourself - I did it on my 06 Monte and I am a computer nerd

Good Luck!

This is exactly what all your problems are. I had to have the Intermediate Steering Shaft in mine replaced under warranty around 100K and I had ALL of my actuators for climate control changed. The actuators themselves are not very expensive, it's the labor to take apart the dash and put it back that is expensive, so I got them all done at once.

Welcome to the Forum!
Sounds like you have gotten some solid advice....

1 thing about the heat disappearing when at a stop...
I would recommend checking the coolant level in the radiator.
Thanks for joining the MCF Family!

+1 On checking the coolant/antifreeze levels. Simple but could be the issue with not getting heat at idle.

Welcome to MCF!
All the advice you have gotten is great. The only thing I would add is, after leveling off your coolant I would check for coolant leak. It's normal to loose some coolant. But to get to the point where your heat is cold when not revving could be a sign there is a leak in the system. If you fill it and don't check, and the problem soon returns then you definitely have a leak.

Thank you all for all of your advice. I can not wait till my refund check comes from school to begin work on it. I wanna have my whole wiring system redone. Does anyone know how much that would cost? I am actually trying to restore it in a sense. Get back to original as much as possible. What steps beside the mandatory, every certain amount of my miles, maintenance work should I do?
