Default My story and Questions

Hey everyone thank you for taking your time to read and maybe help me...

So basically i had a friend who rebuilt a 87 monte carlo ss and when i seen it i fell in love with it and i wanted one..

1 month ago i got my permit.. And guess what i found a 87 monte carlo ls with 45k miles 2 owners and every oil change/maintance paper...

So basically i just want to boost this thing up..
V8 5.0 liter 305 engine in it...

I dont know much but i do know i want to make this thing like brand new.. The engine.. I want the most horsepower i can get but Nicest idle i can get to.. I want it to make people smile... Lol... k.

So what can i buy to make this car last...
I already got cover and New air filter...

Sorry for the drag on..

first off welcome to the forum...things get somewhat slow over the weekends..you'll find alot of 5th & 6th gen montes on this site but there are a few actuall 4th gen owners along with many who would like one. the milage sounds great for a car over twenty years. so many of those cores need alot of attention so it sounds like you found a real charm. If I've gotten to understand anything about most of the 4th gen enthusiest on this more horse power is found thru the mighty big block so expect that right away and start saving cash....the fourth gen retro will require loads of it. post pics when you get a chance Jarhead

Welcome to the MCF family. If you just got your permit, them I'm guessing you're 15, maybe? Do you have a budget to work with? Working on cars gets REAL expensive REAL fast. Of course labor is a big part, so doing it all yourself helps, and is very rewarding knowing you did and can do it yourself.
I'd start with the basics, clean and maintain everything, and repair the rust spots. Get everything fixed that is wore out or rotted away. Synthetic oil, quality filters, such as purolator or K&N, transmission service, etc. THEN start the upgrades.
Making it breath is the goal. Eliminate restrictions but not get carried away, especially in the exhaust area. Put a good set of small tube headers, an intake manifold, maybe a small cam, aluminum heads, etc. But realise that you should be looking for a 4 bolt 350 to drop in to replace that 2 bolt 305. Stroke it, bore it, build it. NOW you got an engine.
That 305 is OK, but don't sink a ton of money into it, it's just not strong enough to handle it.
How's that for a good start.
Show us pics of her. We LOVE pics around here. Use photobucket or some other storage site for best posting of pics.

there are many different ways to go with it everything from improving upon the 305/th20r4 (if O/D) /th200 (if not O/D) or swaping in 350/400/454/th350/th400/th700r4 any combo of that all
