Little Cheese - New Contributor '98 LS 186K miles
Hello fellow Monte Carlo forum members. So I'm new to the forum and not your typical car enthusiast. While I would love to poor money and sweat and pride into my MC, I'm more of a "do my own repairs because I'm self-sufficient and it saves money" kind of guy. But I've enjoyed my 1998 Monte Carlo since I bought it in 2008 with 22K miles. It now has 186K miles (the long commute is now reduced).
I'm 50, a sales professional in the DC area.
As cars go, I usually drive them until they quit or until I can't figure out how to fix them or they cost too much to make it worth while. Biggest regret was giving up the '69 VW Beetle whose transmission failed when I moved across the country, easiest car I've ever worked on. I also regret not getting written into the will of my uncle or buying from him his '67 Mustang Convertible. He let it go for a song. I took my 1991 Eclipse to 222K miles before it took 8 quarts of oil to drive the last 20 miles which told me it was time to call it quits. Still wish I'd taken a stab at that one too (rear main seal). And I had my Honda Pilot at 256k miles with no major repairs until a tree branch totaled it this past Christmas day.
I've rebuilt a carburetor but scratched my head when parts with leftover. Tie rods, alignment (VW), timing, brakes, turn signals (aren't those fun on the Monte Carlo), starters, water pumps, fuel pumps, alternators, limited body work, oil changes, head gaskets, tune-ups, etc. But so far no major engine or transmission repairs (knock on wood and shame on me for not learning how when I had a spanking garage with room to do it). I know enough to be dangerous.
YouTube is a godsend and now I have this forum for advice. I've already posted a few replies on battery issues (check your cables for corrosion) and have a few questions I'll look through the forum to answer (starting and turn signals) then will post if I can't find answers. I'm at that repair or dump stage with the '98 though I'd like to keep this one running if I can.
Looking forward to the interchanges with you all.
