hi i just got an 86 monte carlo and im wondering if i can just take the stock air filter junk off the carb and put one of those nice k&n ones with the chrome top and still pass emissions, and i was wondering if dual flowmaster 40 series with manual cutouts and hedman headers or hooker headers would work well. i want it to be loud when i get on it, and really loud and classic sounding when i open the cutouts.

 

oh its got the 305 ho. in it and runs real strong

If there are no o2 sensors before the carb you should be good to go on your filter swap...

j/k, but making it into a dual snorkel setup looks better than an open element IMO, and is (arguably) better for performance as well. Here is what mine looked like with just the dual snorkel air breather:
