Default 86' SS Sluggish during heavy acceleration

Hello MFC!! I have an 86' SS with a the stock 305 and a 200R transmission. When I accelerate fast such as getting on the freeway, the car seems to get sluggish while changing between the 3rd and 4th gears. Does anyone know what this problem is? Thank You!!

Welcome to the forum!

How many miles on your Monte?
When is the last time you did a tune-up? plugs, wires oil change filter etc?
It may also be due for fluid filter change on the transmission...

Is it only when you step on it in drive? Or does it react the same way shifting it manually?

Have you checked the fluid lately? is it full?
Is it bright red or more of a brownish color?
Does it have a "Burnt" smell?
I would then recommend a fluid and filter change and see if that doesnt improve the quality of the shifts ...

One thing to remember...
This is a 3 speed "Overdrive" transmission ... 4th is actually used to knock down the rpms on the motor for fuel economy... as it does this... it changes the RPM's thus making it feel like its sluggish... due to the lower gear change... to help with fuel economy and less wear and tear on the motor....

It maybe something as simple as a kick down cable adjustment.... Maybe take it to a reputable transmission shop for the fluid filter change and have them also check the kick down cable/adjustment...

Hope this helps!
I'm sure others will chime in with other ideas/info.
