Hello all! I just joined the forum hoping to be able to troubleshoot my car. The gas gauge is out so I've been going by trip miles. Fill up at 300. Two days ago my son ran out of gas at 204 so we filled it up. This morning on my way to work I ran out of gas again at 127 miles. Does anyone have any idea hat might be causing this? It starts up right away and runs great in every other aspect. Please help! TIA.

 

Sounds like bad fuel pump/sending unit or the crap plug they use on GM pumps. Aftermarket one is better IMO

 

Yes... it's highly recommended to change the sending unit... & it's really pretty simple... the whole fuel pump was the best bargain due to the wiring harness improvement! I'm no mechanic by far and i thought on a scale from 1 to 5 (5 being most challenging) this was a 2! And that is just because I've never replaced anything like that before. The location is ideal considering most are not behind the rear seats! Loved that! Changing out the entire pump fixed my exact same problem and there are videos on exactly what to do found on youtube. I bought from A1 auto parts and used their video! Done in two hours, but considering my lack of knowledge, I'd say it's pretty good, really! Hope it helps!

If the answer to either is no, you likely have a clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump. The gauge can be either the sending unit or the gauge itself and is not specifically an indicator the pump is failing. Potentially, you may have a corroded connection at the fuel pump or a failing fuel pressure regulator. As with any issue with a car, it would be extremely helpful to know how many miles on the car and on the fuel filter and any services done on the affected system. You also could have gotten bad gas on your son's fill up, although fuel injection helps to minimize those issues. I'm assuming you have no service check light on.
