Winter is driving is easy if you pay attention.Turn off the cell, and turn down the music, if you can't hear the slosh hitting the underside it's too loud.

NEVER oversteer, if you over steer and the car keeps going forward, DO NOT BRAKE, lay off the gas, but don't brake, and slowly correct the oversteer until the car responds. I've hit a curb or two forgetting this rule, but luckily haven't done any severe damage yet.

While on the highway depending on the snow, you can go anywhere from 50, down to 35. If it's a bad slush stick to the 40's, unless you have really good tires, know the road well, and feel comfortable going faster. Driving over 50 MPH in my own experience in slush you are permenantly hydroplaning. Better tires would help big time.

If the snow is "dry" and not slushy, you can probably do over 50, but be careful, slushy spots, and ice under the snow will surprise you, and put you in the ditch faster than you can figgure it out. What I said about the music? comes in real important here. If it's slushy, you can hear the slush splattering ur car. If the snow is mostly dry, all ull hear is this "crunch"-like sound of your tires packing the snow.

Semis will scare the EVER LIVING HECK out of you, because they carry so much weight, it's easy for them to plow through the snow... They'll pass you , and in the snow a semi trailer that's 2 feet away seems like 2 inches. Just don't plan on getting within 10 mph of a semi on bad roads. If you want to try and increase speed, try to follow one, stay in his tracks if you can. He'll clear the road for you. The ONLY time I have EVER passed a semi in the winter? it was up a hill after a stop sign.. Trust me, if ur going faster than a semi on snowy/slushy roads, you're either in a snowmobile, or simply crazy.

Don't let confidence over-play your driving. Snow changes in a matter of minutes, so you always have to be paying attention. Talking on a cell will seriously effect your driving ability. Remember you need ALL the stop/slow down time you can get, and a cellphone means it'll take you twice as long just to notice the danger.

Eventually you'll be able to feel what the roads are like through the steering wheel. You'll notice the car wants to turn itself if you hit slush, as it tends to build up in the areas where tires aren't running.

If you drop the p-side onto the shoulder and there's any kind of lip, do not jerk the wheel to get back on the road. Slowly, turn to the left to bring it back up on the cement. If there's too much of a lip, and you have to turn a bunch you'll shoot straight into the other lane, or the median, once you get back on the cement. so that takes a lot of getting used to.

On snowy road, let me re-iterate. If you are not in control of the direction of a car, on snow, braking does NOTHING except ensure that you will continue to skid. Reduce throttle untill you feel the tires starting to "grab" again. (you'll feel it in the wheel) Then correct the skid.

Floor mats and things of the like can help you regain traction if you go in the ditch or get stuck. If there's a bunch of snow piled up, plan on digging, or calling a truck.

If you get a good snow on the weekend, get out there early. Test the roads. Find out the difference between fresh snow, and snow that's been driven on. Work on a road you know, and start out slow. Slowly increase speed until you know what that limit is. Then... Remember those limits, and cut speed by 5-10 MPH. This gives you that extra roomfor when conditions change (not if, WHEN, because they will change)

Fresh snow, packed snow, and slush
