[b]Fantasy preview: Homestead-Miami
Harvick, Gordon even Biffle, but stay away from Johnson

Sixth-place Jeff Gordon is not mathematically eliminated, but he will be as soon as Jimmie Johnson fires his engine in the Ford 400 on Sunday, which leaves Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to challenge for the Nextel Cup.
If Johnson finishes 12th or better, it will not matter what the competition does; he will hoist the trophy.
Kenseth has run badly enough in the past few weeks that he and car owner Jack Roush have virtually conceded the championship to any other driver, which means that Johnson's magic number over the two men tied for third (Hamlin and Harvick) is only 20th.
If they experience trouble, Johnson would need only to finish 29th to keep the championship out of Earnhardt's reach. All of this is good news to fans of the No. 48, but the conclusion is far from foregone as every one of the Chasers has experienced some sort of trouble in the final 10 races.
Diversity
The NASCAR schedule is about diversity. While more than one-third of the events are run on similarly configured, 1.5- and 2-mile tracks, the champion has to be strong on unrestricted, intermediate speedways, restrictor-plate superspeedways, short tracks, road courses and all sorts of venues in between.
It is only fitting that the season should end at Homestead -- one of the truly unique courses on which the series runs. Not only is Homestead the single true-oval on the schedule, it has progressive banking.
The closer a driver gets to the outside wall, the steeper the banking becomes, which allows him to lean against the asphalt cushion. The lower groove is shorter around the course, and when the drivers exit the turns, the benefit of one lane over the other is non-existent and they race door-post-to-door-post down the straightaways.
Homestead is the site of some of the greatest racing fantasy owners see all year -- NASCAR saved one of its best for last.

Because it is unique, owners want to pay particular attention to the past three years on this track and ignore the stats during the first four seasons. When the track was initially built, it was a flat replica of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the only thing this track shares in common with the 1999 edition is the mailing address.
