Off Week Discussions
I think Denny still has a chance. The smallest chance in the world but still a chance. I realize he will get no points but lets just pretend he blew 5 motors and finished last. He would still get five or six points combined in the 5 races if this happened. He would have to get nothing but top tens and win at least 4 races to maybe have a shot. So yeah sadly he is probably done for the year. I realize hindsight is 20/20 but as a Dale Jr fan during the offseason I wondered why didn't Dale sit out the final two races before the Chase after that tire test crash at Kansas at the end of August. He said he knew he probably had a concussion and that he didn't feel right. If he would have just sat out then his body would have had time to heal as it only took two weeks out to heal from two concussions surely two weeks out would have been plenty with just the one concussion. He would have been fresh and ready for the Chase because he had a big enough cushion to where he would have still made the Chase regardless. Jr should have realized he didn't feel right and to understand the circumstances he was in could have allowed him to heal without throwing away his championship hopes or a good points finish like he ended up doing.

Here is a good one... as part of the fun going to Occoneechee Speedway in Hillsborough, NC, a 10 lap grudge race was run between the Bakers and the Petty's. Buck and Buddy Baker, Lee and Richard Petty. Buddy and Richard started the front row, Lee and Buck i nteh second row. Buddy Baker won the race.

5 races, lets say an average finish of 14th... that's 150 points he will miss. I don't see him digging out of that hole to get to 20th place and getting enough wins to pull it off... stick a fork in him... he may win a race in 2013, but he'll be making his run for the 2014 title..
It seems like injuries and the such come in sets... Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin, nad Dale Earnhardt were within like 2 years.
Now, Dale Jr missed 2 races with a concussion, Nationwide driver Michael Annett has a dislocated sternum, now Denny Hamlin has a broken back....

The Petty/Allison feud came to a head at North Wilkesboro in 1972. The two were basically the only competitive teams for half the season, and most of the races that year were won by either Bobby Allison or Richard Petty. Often, the duo would finish 10 laps ahead of 3rd place even! That is, unless David Pearson and the Wood Bros Mercury showed up....
That brings us to North Wilkesboro in August of 1972. The two were again about 6 laps ahead of 3rd place and racing for the lead. In the last 39 laps, the lead swapped 13 times. The two races side by side and bounced off of each other more times than most people knew how to count. They hit each others bumpers, banged door to door, and the crowd loved it.
With 2 to go, they tangled enough to get a tire rubbing on Allisons car and ruin teh front end of Pettys car.... a crash that occured while trying to clear a lapped car The tire going down was more than Allison could hold on the final lap and Petty passed him.
This photo shows at the top, the white flag lap, and at the bottom, Petty taking the checkered flag.
Later on, in victory lane, an enraged Bobby Allison fan attempted to beat up Richard Petty.

Here is one for you Mark Martin/Dale Earnhardt fans.
Mark Martin was leading the points for much of the season in 1990. But lingering over him, the thought that his intake manifold had too high of a rise for the carburetor, and that cost him 48 points at Richmond in February that year. Mark Martin spent 2 days testing in Atlanta trying to get his car right before Robert Yates ended up giving Jack Roush one of his cars to run the race with. Mark Martin and the crew worried so much trying to find speed, they overthought the race and ended up losing the championship to Dale Earnhardt... by 25 points...
This is Martins wife trying to comfort him a little bit after he lost the championship at Atlanta.
