Race Recap: Johnson Gets 2nd Indy Win

Jul 27, 2008 at 08:28 PM

Race Recap: Johnson Captures Second Brickyard Title

Jimmie Johnson and his team celebrate winning their second Allstate 400 at the Brickyard in three years.
– NASCAR’s best drivers made the best of a bad situation Sunday afternoon, pampering their cars to save tires during a series of short green flag runs at the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard Sprint Cup race.

A rough track and a stubborn tire that refused to cooperate made the race at the Brickyard a survival test for 43 of the world’s best drivers.

A series of NASCAR-imposed, safety-first, precautionary pit stops broke the racing into 10- or 12-lap dashes.

And, in the end, defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson held off hard-charging Carl Edwards by a car length. Johnson, who started the race from the pole position, threw caution to the wind for the final seven laps, squeezing every ounce of speed out of his Lowe’s-sponsored, Rick Hendrick-owned Chevrolet.

It was a nail-biting race for drivers and crew chiefs, who struggled through a long afternoon with a tire problem from start to finish. Race tires that got better and better as the race progressed in past Brickyard races never got better in this one. As a result, it created a race unlike most on the NASCAR circuit – one in which a driver and team’s primary goal was to race conservatively instead of flat-out, full-speed as they normally do.

When Johnson and Edwards dueled the final laps, they turned some of the fastest laps of the day. In fact, the speeding duo drove away from third-place finisher Denny Hamlin, who led the race prior to the final caution period.
