Bad Day for Smokey Yunick fans.....
The day I make a signature, apparently the mans famous garage, titled, "The Best Damn Garage in Town" in Daytona Beach, FL burned down... I think I put a hex on him.
Smokey Yunick was a legendary car builder, and best known for his explotation of the gray area in NASCAR. HE died in '02, I believe. But his antics were pretty crazy.....
One time, his car was being torn down by officials, and they had the gas tank out of the car to measure the size. They gave him a list of 9 things to fix before the race, and Smokey got in an argument, eventually climbed in the car, cranked it up WITHOUT A FUEL TANK, and said, "You better make it 10" and drove to the pit area.
He once went to Atlanta with a Chevrolet Chevelle built to 7/8ths scale of a real car so it would handle better and be lighter. This eventually led to templates.
He once went to Daytona with a '55 Chevrolet molded out of aluminum. This led to NASCAR going by the cars with magnets.
He also loved Indy, because it had "a small rule book." He ran Indy in the 60's.
He was best known for his Chevrolets and Pontiac years.... but even he was lured away by sharp lines of the Ford Torino in '69. His car, driven by Joe Leonard at the time, is pictured in my signature right now.
For you GM guys, he actually did a lot in engineering some of those famous muscle car engines. GM often called him in to check out their engines before production.
His cars were always black and gold, and he won 9 times before boldly storming into Bill Sr.'s office, telling him he was tired of his BS, and was leaving NASCAR.
I have a small 18 wheeler with Smokey Yunick's picture on it, and I even own his book entitled "Smokey's Power Secrets."

. . . the property was sold for development and much of it was razed. However, one building remained on the corner and was used to store chemicals and tires, according to fire officials.
