Default Winding sound when accelerating

Hello!

I have a 2004 Monte Carlo and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with theirs. When I accelerate even just a little bit, the engine makes this loud winding sound. It almost sounds like the sound that some power steering mechanisms make when you make a sharp turn, or can be described as that winding sound that a manual car makes when it's in reverse, only this happens even when I'm driving straight.Just thought I'd get some insight before I take it into the dealer. Thanks, andby the way,I'm so glad that I found this forum!

Hi Dezra2K, & Welcome to the MCF,It's difficult to determine your problem from just the written word, and it could be many things.1. Do you hear the sound when you are in park & revthe engine ?, or is it when you are moving ?2. Does the sound increase with the rev's ?3. Is the sound coming from the engine bay area orfrom the wheel area ? (Bad Wheel Bearings, brakes, rotor's etc : )4. A lose belt can cause a winding sounds, but also a alternator when it starts to go bad can make a winding sound.5. How many miles are on your Monte Carlo ?6. How long has it been happening ?7. Does it have the original Power Ster ?8. Has your transmission ever been serviced ?Could the sound be coming from the Transmission area ?Please post more details, and maybe a member can helpif they have a clue : )Or,you could make a tape of the sound & post it.Good Luck, I hope that you return to the MCF, once you find out what your problemwas, & solved : )`Space

Sorry, maybe these extra details would help in describing my problem, if anyone could help:

1. The sound only happens when I am driving, not when I'm parked, but also when I'm in reverse.
2. It sounds like its coming from the engine, not the wheel area.
3. I have almost 50,000 miles on it.
4. This problem has been happening for the past few days.
5. I'm not sure if it has the original power steering or if that ever was replaced, but I would imagine the transmission has been at least looked at before because it's a GM Certified Vehicle that I bought last year. Unfortunately, the warranty is up already.

Second thing... Check ALL fluids, tranny fluid, everything... That will help us to rule out some possibilities...

IF you have a digital camera, please do take a quick video and post it... It would help greatly in ruling out certain things...

Serpentine or idler arm?

Water pump pulley?

Alternator pulley?

Best to see a mechanic.

Is it like a metal on metal screatch? That would be a bearing. Easiest way to find it is to pop the hood and have someone else hit the throttle.

That will let you know. It also might be a belt wearing out. WD-40 may quiet it down, but you need to fix the problem by getting a new belt if that is the case.
