Default Used Catalytic Converter

Hello, New here and hoping to find some answers to a question I have.

I have a 99 Monte Z34. It has the 3800 series II. Currently it has 166xxx miles on it and still runs like a champ. However, right now it DESPERATELY needs some exhaust work. The pipe that bolts on to the exhaust manifold is shot. Specifically, the flex part is cracked. It sounds like a rocket is taking off when I accelerate. Not to mention the exhaust fumes seeping into the car smell great I've been told to avoid a non GM replacement because of problems. Not sure what kind of problems, so I've held off. A new one from GM runs $600!

I'm wondering if I would be able find the part off of any similar year GM car with that engine and apply it to my monte. I know the Grand Prix GTs are essentially the same engine setup but in a different body. There's a few around me that are being parted out.

Thanks in advance.

Are you saying it is physically broken at the flex? If it is, take it to an exhaust shop. They can weld in a new flex piece.

i agre with luse4 a exaughst shop can put in a new flex pip in where the old one is also they could put one in after the cat as well to help with the engine flex. it sounds wiered some times when the flex breaks it is due to some thing in a bind. from the engine or the rest of the exaughst. the shop will go over every thing to see if there is a problem causing the original to break.

That's what I initially thought as well. However, after being to 3 repair shops all have said they could do the same thing, until try looked at it. After they examine it they all say a whole new unit is required.

So that's why I'm aiming for a used one.
