For those who have been reading the transmission problems thread you will know that My trany is likely on it's way out with a large price tag to repair.
On a side note I picked up my neighboors 1989 Ford F150 for next to nothing due to it's trany being done.
On the Ford I'm going to get a replacement from one of the many wreckers in my area and install myself.

Which sparked a thought.
I checked car-part.com and sure enought there are several places with 01 Monte trany's from anywere around $400 - $1000 CDN
So I'm thinking I will see if the trany shop will install a used trany (when my old one finally goes or I can't take it any more, which ever come first)
I figure I could get two used tranys in my monte at the cost of getting a rebuilt one installed, so inialy it seems cost effective.

What are the thoughts on this?
And any ideas on which years of tranys for an 01 Monte SS 3.8L will fit.
Also does any one know the stock ratio for this tranny (02's show up with a 3.05 or 3.29 ratio)

u need to be careful with those used trannys as you could pay someone alot of cash to install one and it not work or have problems that will cause it to be rebuit. make sure theres a warranty involved. and trust me i know all about what u mean i just spent $2,180.00 to have mine rebuilt but it was also "built" id be leary of a used one unless u can inspect it b4 install or even dyno it somehow. just my .02


cost wise it is the better choice but if u plan to keep the monte for any given time id go with a rebuilt or new

 

how much are they charging you to rebuild your tranny???


i wouldn't suggest buying used just for the fact your going to get someone else's problems, there's reasons they'renot in the cars

i had to get a tranny rebuilt in an old car i had (94 intrepid ) and it only cost me 500 bucks

 

The Trany shop wants $2500 CDN to rebuild.
The las one I had cost $3400 CDN, that was a year and a half ago.

Mind you the first one My planetary gears blew apart.
This one is my EPC (electronic pressure control) solenoid (causing hard shifting once it heats up).
