Default temp gauge??

I have an 87 ss and the temp gauge isnt working. there are two sensors on top of the thermostat housing. i would love to know the names of those because they might be the culprit. Any suggestions??

The sending unit for temp guage is located on drivers side cylinder head between number 1 and number 3 spark plugs.
