If you have to change the power steering pump, if the water pump is still original, I would consider swapping that out. You have to pull the PS pump out of the way to access a bolt for the water pump.
And if you wanna upgrade, get a Series III water pump. The Series II has a stamped steel impeller and the Series III (you'll have to verify before purchase) should have a cast aluminum. Both are interchangeable. I recently swapped to a Series III water pump. No regret, slightly improved cooling.

Jason, yeah that sound like a plan. When I did the coolant elbows I wasn't read to do the water pump as well. But this time, since I have to do the power steering I may as well do the water pump too. Especially since I am going to replace the radiator, just go ahead and rebuild the whole cooling system. One less thing to worry about!

I know the feeling of rebuilding the cooling system. This summer, my Grand Am blew a heater core, sooooo.... I changed the heater core, heater hoses, the plastic "quick connect" fittings (which I think are junk to begin with), the water pump and the radiator hoses (and all new hose clamps too). I almost went the extra mile and changed the radiator. I skipped on that because I know a lot of people that owned this gen Grand Am and had a ton of miles and NEVER a radiator issue (so I'm rolling the dice that I'll be fine).
Not overly costly (Grand Ams are CHEAP for decent quality parts), just a little time consuming, but a nice peace of mind.
Biggest annoyance, some of the factory clamps were in horrible positions to grab the tabs and release. Last clamp I gave up, metal cutting disc on a Dremel and split that sucker in too. But the new worm gear clamps, EASY access

Hey Aerocoupe, I have a 2000 monte carlo ss. About a month ago the traction off and abs lights came on at the same time. I havent really had a chance to look at it. If I back out of my driveway and put it in drive sometimes now the traction active light comes on and it make a slipping kind of noise. If I turn off the traction control before I drive it it seems ok. The abs light comes on intermittently. Do you think its a hub or abs wheel sensor? Sometimes I here kind of a loud clicking noise when i push on or slightly release the break pedal. It sounds like its coming from the left front and almost sounds like a switch. Any help would be much appreciated.
that sensor is part of the hub, if were me id suspect the hub based on the description you gave. the clicking noise you mention has me confused with out seeing it first hand but the hub would be where I started looking if were my car. ive had and heard sort of a click before and felt it in the pedal from the abs if that's what you are trying to describe. New hub fixed that on my old 03 SS
