Rack and Pinion Replacement

Rack and Pinion Replacement
I have a 2001 SS and I recently noticed the boot on the rack and pinion is leaking on the passenger side. Last fall I replaced a bad power steering pump and pressurized line, but still noticed a small leak. Through the winter it was so cold and the fluid was so thick it was not an issue, but now that it is getting warm it is leaking a bottle of power steering fluid a day even if I don't drive it. From what I understand the seals are bad on the rack and pinion and I need a boot. Dose anyone have any experiance with this issue? I would like to know if it is worth it to fix my rack and pinion or just buy a whole new one. Also how hard of a job is this?
Thanks for any advice.

Replace the P/S rack. Even at the dealer level we no longer repair internal P/S rack seal leaks. Engine cradle will need to be lowered slightly in the rear to gain clearance for rack removal. When the intermediate steering shaft is disconnected from the rack make sure you secure the steering wheel to prevent rotation of the wheel. Steering wheel rotation while the steering shaft is disconnected can result in damage of the steering wheel airbag coil assembly. You will need to have the front wheel alignment checked after replacement and the toe adjusted to specs.
