Default Problems starting my 1985 monte carlo ss

I have an 1985 Monte Carlo SS. I just put an yellow top battery in my car and replaced my starter. And my car still doesnt start. None of my guages are working except my rpm's . My check engine light always came on when i started and i drove.I took it to an mechanic and they told me that theres no power getting to my distrubotor cap. Help me!

Did the gauges work prior to replacing the starter? If yes, the first thing I'd check would be to make sure the wiring on the starter solenoid was installed on the correct terminal. Then look at the distributor where the wiring harness plugs into it. One of the terminals will have a + sign. Unplug the connector and connect a 12v test light to the + side of the connector. Ground the other end of the test light. Turn the ignition to the on position, then the start position and see if the test light stays illuminated. If it does, plug the connector back into the distributor and try to start the vehicle. If the test light doesn't illuminate you'll need to diagnose the open circuit. It could be a bad fusable link, resistance wire or the ignition switch.
