Default Odd Tranny Issue

Howdy. I'm new here as of today, and I was brought here by an odd issue with my car...
It's a 97 Monte LS, about 120K miles. Regularly maintained, runs like a champ.

Was driving home, and I had to floor it to pull out in front of a semi on the freeway. No biggie, I do it a fair amount (not a lot, probably once every 2 or 3 weeks)
It downshifted once, and then a second time, as it usually does. Except on the second downshift, it felt as though it slipped into neutral, and the car redlined for a few seconds, hitting the rev limiter. I let off the gas for a second, pushed it down again, and the car continued normally.

Nothing like this has ever happened before, and it doesn't feel like there is anything wrong with the tranny otherwise. I assume it is just a fluke. Is random slippage into neutral even a thing? Is the tranny going bad?
Thanks for your help

I experienced that once on a 96 Monte I owned. One tip if you drive around town make sure this is in D and not OD the overdrive on these should be used for Highway driving, what happens is they do there shifting in and out of OD when you get to about 45 or over and then shift back when not. So the town drive may always be in the 45 or so range and you will be shifting a lot in town. There used to be an information section in the Owners Manual about that. But it is good practice. Will save the Transmission. Check the Transmission fluid make sure it is Bright Red and not Brown. If it is Brown you need to change it. If you have a Garage Service your Car " Check everything they worked on in front of the them Before you Pay the bill and leave the place."

I'll keep that in mind, thank you.
I actually just had the tranny fluid changed about 3500 miles ago, and I'm due back at the shop here soon for an LOF. I'll have them take a look at it.
