Default No Dash Lights - Headlight Switch Problem?

2004 Monte Carlo SS Intimidator. Start up the car, it has dash and accessory lights. Put it into gear (triggers daytime running lights) or just pull the light switch to turn on headlamps... the dash and accessory lights go out. From the 70's I remember the headlight switch going bad would do this, but it was easy to replace and cheap. To replace the headlight switch in this car, I would need to remove the dashboard (according to a Haynes manual).

Could this problem be caused by something else other than the headlight switch, if anyone else has had this experience.

Also -- does anyone know what pulling the headlight switch plunger in and out three times does? I hear that computer reset chirp when I do this...

Thanks.

I'm a parts changer, not a mechanic. Thanks for the help.

I think turning the headlight switch on and off 3 times resets the tire pressure monitor.

That's what I think I paid, shopping for the best price online and at the local auto stores. You can get one with or without the fog light bezel. I can't believe they are $100, as they are pretty much the same as the ones I used to unsnap in about a minute from the local junkyards (for $5).
You can dial up a YouTube video that shows step by step how to remove your dash and install it. It's not hard to do, takes about 15 minutes. Just have to be careful not to break any clips or lose any screws.
