Default newer engine?

I don't really know if this is the proper subforum to post this thread, but here goes.

I just changed my water pump the other day (and this may be a rather trivial question, so don't beat me up too badly) I like to use the chiltons manual so I know im not missing any steps while doing the work.

In said manual, it stated that the 01 and later model 3.8 engines, you need to remove (or move) the power steering pump to remove the water pump. I had to do just that.

Now, I do know that the engine in my car is not the original one, salvage title on the car and even my insurance agent tells me that just means it was totalled out due to mechanical failure.

Is it possible I have a series II from a newer car? The strange thing about that though is that on other things I've had to work on that claim I have to do something on a 01 and later, I haven't had to do.

I realize it is a general manual, but what are your views or opinions? Also, does anyone know a way I can find out?
