Default Need Some Advice, Turn on Brights and all lights go out

So I need a little help. My mom is scared to drive her Monte now. When you are driving with the headlights on and pull the lever back to engage the brights, all of the lights will turn off. It happened to me once and I just flicked the switch back and forth and they came on. It is a randome problem. When it happened to her she panicked and locked up the brakes and almost wrecked. Also when I had it you would have to pull the lever back to or three times for it to engage. Where should I start digging?

a little research is showing it could be the switch housing. I was hoping someone had the same problem already and new for sure. A new switch is 270.00 and I can get the steering column used for 100.00. Thanks JJ, maybe someone else can help us out.
