Default Metal Shavings

I recently had my catalytic converter replaced on my 2001 SS. It was full of metal shavings. My mechanic told me that this problem is common on this car. Does anyone know where these shavings are coming from? Thanks in advance

I dont know about monte carlos but it could be the internals of the cat breaking down over time due to corrosion. I had this issue with my 04 malibu.

X2 on the cat breaking down. You shouldn't eed to worry about anything going wrong with the engine to aleviate that concern. The 2000+ cats do have some issues with them.

yah cat's go like that on these cars, i think all the cars come with something like an 8 year 100,000mile warranty on the cats do they not?? i remember someone saying that before, so there's obviously a problem with them
