Default Maintenance Suggestions 3.5L (new owner)

My son is picking up a new to him 2006 Monte Carlo 3.5L LT with 119k miles.

We will be changing out all the fluids (brake/PS/coolant). Also plan on doing tranny filter and replacing (not flushing) tranny fluid. What else do you guys recommend with 119k on the clock not knowing any maintenance history?

Change air and cabin filters. I do it every year. --> https://montecarloforum.com/forum/fw...7th-gen-18754/

Check brake discs and pads.

Find out if the power steering hose recall was done. Fluid splashing on the exhaust manifold can start a fire and ruin your day.

Speaking of recalls - got the ignition key recall done? I've been putting it off.

Check if the rear window defroster works. There is a common fail point in the wiring harness connector by the passenger kick panel. --> https://montecarloforum.com/forum/mo...g-32141/page2/

Tinfoil hat wearers: If you don't pay for OnStar, disconnect the module in the trunk. -->http://www.barovelli.com/projects/ca...youronstar.htm

Awesome. Thanks for ALL the great tips! I seen the ignition recall, didn't know about the power steering recall.

Is there some kind of tune-up on the 3.5L besides spark plugs & spark plug wires?

Thanks again BeachBumMike. I downloaded the Owners Manual just fine but the Repair Manual was just 2 introduction pages. I'll see if I can find it elsewhere.

Sure do appreciate the help.

Darned cars are so computer controlled to maximize fuel mileage and reduce emissions that there's really not much more than replace things that wear out like belts or the plugs.

I once set the dwell gap on a VW using cigarette papers. Who remembers ignition points? Timing lights?

This is an interesting read lots of specs and part numbers - https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...onte-Carlo.pdf

For more serious repairs, Haynes manual - #24047. About $17 on eBay or Amazon.

Great link, thanks! Yes, I'll definitely be picking up a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Oh and yes I remember points and timing lights... don't miss them much
